"Wake up Logan, we're here!" I feel Shannon shaking me.
I slowly open my eyes with the sun shining in my face and see the sign for Grace Memorial. I am brought back to reality of why we are here.
I heard Shannon on the phone arguing with her Mom earlier when she thought I was asleep. Apparently almost everything we assumed was true. Cheryl was pregnant but she wasn't sure if Michael was the father or if Jake the one night stand was the father. Either way, she felt like she was and I quote "too old to be raising a baby." Who leaves a baby for someone else to raise?! So here we are trying to figure out what we are going to do with a baby girl with no name.
I step out of the car and fall in stride with Shannon. She looks back at me and grabs my hand, squeezing it gently.
"You okay?" She ask, her voice laced with worry.
I nod.
"I should be asking you that."
She stops and gives me a hug. I stand there and take in her embrace, I pull her in tighter making the feeling that she gives me last.
"Come on, let's go do this!" She plants a kiss on my lips and pulls me towards the entrance.
We walk up to the counter to the receptionist.
"Hi, my name is Shannon Peters, I received a phone call last night about a baby girl Peters."
The receptionist stares at the computer screen without looking up at us.
"Oh yes Miss Peters, we have been expecting your arrival. Let me call the nurse for you."
We sit down in the lobby and wait for the nurse to arrive. Shannon shakes her legs nervously. I reach over and lay my hand on her leg. She looks up at me, placing her hand on top of mine and I see her facial muscles begin to relax.
We look up as a long legged blond approaches us.
"Miss Peters? Hi, I'm Ms. Adams the social worker. Ellie the nurse is waiting for us down the hall if you can just follow me."
I stand to follow Shannon when the social worker stops me.
"Are you family as well?"
Before I can answer, Shannon speaks.
"She's my girlfriend, if I go she goes."
Ms. Adams smiles.
"Well, follow me."
This time Shannon grabs my hand as we follow the social worker to a conference room. We walk in to find who I assumed to be the nurse Ellie waiting on us. She stands and reaches out her hand as we enter the room.
"Hi, my name is Ellie Locklear. I am the nurse who has been taking care of Little Miss Peters. This over here." As she points to the dark haired woman next to her. "This is Darlene Waters, she took care of your mother during her stay."
Shannon and I take turns shaking hands and introducing ourselves with everyone before taking our seats.
"Thank you guys for coming." Says Ms Waters.
The social worker, Ms. Adams folds her arms.
"We are going to get right down to business. Your mother was brought here to our facility after being in a car accident two days ago. She was not injured other than a few scratches and bruises. She did come in with contractions that progressed even with medications given to stop it."
