Cassie applied her last bit of make-up, then looked herself over in the mirror. She had on a red dress that she had just bought yesterday, some light make-up and flat shoes. She did her hair a little differently than before in a kind of messy style. She thought she looked okay.
"Mom, are you ready?" She called, as she made her way downstairs. "Ben is going to be here any minute!" She went into the living room and grabbed her wedding gifts for Anna. She had two of them, one personal and the other was just a little something she picked up the other day.
She grabbed them off the table and checked her phone, as her mom called back, "I don't understand why we can't just drive ourselves!" Cassie rolled her eyes and said, "Because he is my date and he insisted on driving the both of us." Under her breath, she muttered, "He wouldn't let me make you walk."
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. "Mom, he's here!" She walked over to the door and opened it to her handsome boyfriend. "Hey," she greeted with a wide smile. "You look...wow, you look really good. And you cut your hair!"
He laughed as she reached up and ran her fingers through his short hair. "You like?" He asked. She nodded and told him, "Makes you look younger. I can't been seen with an old man." He grabbed her hips and pulled her to him.
"You gorgeous, cheeky thing," he chuckled. "God, you look absolutely stunning, love. This dress works wonders on you." He took her hand and had her twirl for him. "Are we done playing Cinderella?" Her mom's voice asked, as she comedown the stairs.
Cassie stopped her twirling and laughing and looked up at her mom. "Afternoon, Kate," Ben greeted, as he put an arm around Cassie's waist and held her close. "Are my ladies ready?" Cassie turned to him and nodded, so as soon as she locked the door, they were off to Anna's party.
They were going a ways out to Anna's grandparents place in Montecito. The only reason it made the drive so long was because they had to drive uphill for several minutes. When they were approaching the house, Ben chuckled and said, "This place is bloody gorgeous."
"Anna's grandparents picked a great time to retire," Cassie told him. "We used to come here all the time when we were younger." Ben took her hand in his, then said, "Remind me to get some retirement tips from them."
He parked behind the series of cars and got out, opening the doors for Cassie and her mom. He laced his and Cassie's fingers together, then walked up to the open front door. They went in and looked around at all the guests mingling and some swaying to Frank Sinatra, who was playing over the speakers.
"Mom," Cassie said, "I'm going to take Ben to meet Dean and Diane. We'll be back." She quickly dragged Ben away, then stopped and turned to him. "Okay, I need to tell you something." He nodded and said, "Alright."
She looked over his shoulder to make sure her mom hadn't followed, then said, "Dean and Diane are Anna's parents. They've always been here for me, more so than mom ever has. When my dad died, they were so nice and let me stay with them when things got rough...my point being...their like parents to me. Dean is like a second dad and Diane is the mom I never had. So, you meeting them is going to be like meeting the parents. They're very protective of me, ever since Justin. Okay?"
