i'm rewatching free! bc after watching starting days i thought that i should rewatch the series so i can better understand and piece together the timeline
and i really love this anime but right now just
I HATE THIS ANIME SO MUCH WHAT THE FUCK RIN
i forgot how mean rin acted when he saw makoto and nagisa and haru at the old swimming place and at samezuka
but just oHMYGOD HES SUCH A LITTLE SHIT AT THE BEGINNING
okayokayok enough about how much i hate rin (he's okay when he gets his fucking shit sorted out though)
now i present to you the timeline i've got so far from watching starting days and episode 1 and 2 (and bits and pieces of 8 and 9) of free! (spoiler warning so watch the movie and seasons before reading this)
grade school - its before the relay and rin suddenly tells makoto and haru that the day after the relay he's going to australia to become an amazing swimmer, so the relay is going to be the last time he swims with them. then he tells haru that if they swim together (or something) he'll show him a sight he's never seen before. rin, haru, makoto, and nagisa all swim together in the relay as best friends and they win the relay, they get a trophy for that and rin says that since they all won it it wouldn't make sense for one person to take it home so they should bury it like a timecapsule. (and i think thats pretty much it)
middle school - makoto and haru are in their first year of middle school, even though haru doesn't want to, he and makoto, and two new kids (asahi and ikuya), all join the swimming club. since there's four of them they can all do the relay together. haru then says that he only swims free and he doesn't do relays. the coach then gets kinda pissed and challenges him to a swim-off. (if coach wins haru has to do the relay and has to swim other strokes than just free - if haru wins he doesn't have to do the relay and can just swim free) they tie in the race meaning that haru only has to swim free, but he has to do the relay. later throughout the time everyone develops their own problems, ikuya has a bad relationship with his brother (whos the coach of the swim club), asahi can't swim free, makoto doesn't know if he likes swimming or if he just does it because of haru, and haru can swim relays. then after some bonding they all become better friends and talk about their problems and understand eachother better and their problems get resolved. they all win the relay at the competition together and then sousuke gives haru a letter from rin in australia and says that its for him. haru is then a little confused at he looks at the letter and reads it because its addressed to sousuke and the way it talks about haru in the letter isn't like it was written for him to read. the sousuke points out that when talking about haru where it says "that guy" under that is the word "you" which was originally written but then erased. sousuke further explains that rin was going to send it to haru but he didn't want a response back so then decided to give it to sousuke (even though the letter was meant for haru.) then after school ends rin comes back to japan for a short time and he meets up with haru at their old swimming club, they both race and even though rin went to australia to get better haru still beat him. rin then gets really upset and haru feels bad because he hurt rin. then because of that haru quits competitive swimming.
highschool - in makoto and haru's 3rd year of highschool they find out that their old friend nagisa goes to their highschool. makoto and nagisa and haru run into rin while looking around inside their old swimming club they went to as kids and find that he's come back from australia. he then asks if they were looking for the trophy they buried and throws it on the ground. later nagisa proposes to haru and makoto that they make a swimming club so that they can swim with rin, so then makoto becomes the captain, haru the vice-captain they get a literature teacher to be their supervisor and rin's sister gou becomes the manager. then later a guy named rei joins the team. a lot of time later at the competition rin challenges haru to a race and says if he wins then he won't ever have to swim with haru again, and he wins leaving haru asking himself why does he swim. and then more shit happens and some more shit, then at the end they all become friends again.
yeah thats all i really got, some parts are probably wrong but ngl i'm happy that starting days came out because now the timeline of free! is all fitting together in my head
also what the hell happened to asahi and ikuya, i deMAND AN ANSWER
another also, how the fuck do people type with short fingernails, i have to type slowly or just do a lot of retyping, its so much easier to type with longer fingernails
