I turned up the volume on my iPod as I pushed my way through the crowds of chatty teenagers who thought they're so cool. Truth be told, no one's going to care what happened or who the hell you were 20 years from now.
Of all the things I still remember
Summer's never looked the same
Years go by and time just seems to fly
But memories remain
In the middle of September
We'd still play out in the rain
Nothing to lose but everything to gain
Reflecting now on how things could've been
It was worth it in the --------------------
Someone had jerked the ear bud out of my ear. I turned to pound their head in (I took music really seriously) when I realized it was Maddie. She was wearing a baby blue shirt that said, "Save the chimps, they’re family".
"What?" I asked.
It was lunchtime, and it was Monday, and I was not in a good mood. I finally managed to ditch the guys after showing them the video game store, the electronics store, and the sports shop. I didn’t know how anyone could spend so long in a puny store, staring at skateboards. They didn’t even have the best boards, 'cause it's such a small place and it's not in the mall. Now I had to take them to the skate park. Yippee.
I wish they would just get a GPS or look things up on a map. But noooooo. They had to use me as a guide. Ugh. Stupid (hot) band geeks.
"How was your weekend?" Maddie asked. "I can't stop thinking about HCS!"
"Ha, me neither," I said truthfully. Because they'd been bothering me all weekend.
"So I told you," she went on. "I've found places that they could possibly be, and heard they might be doing some gigs in the city..."
I tuned out, nodding every once in a while. The thing was, if she wanted to find out where they were, she just had to go to 3, 4, and 5 on my speed dial, courtesy of Kevin. Oh, damn. I’d forgotten to ask Mike about Maddie... oh well. I bet it's not long before they tracked me down again.
"Do you think they'd be more likely play at Juke's or Dante?" interrupted Maddie.
"No idea," I replied. I stopped outside the cafeteria's doors, knowing Maddie would go in to her friends while I headed to somewhere quiet with me and my thoughts.
"So I'll call you okay?" Maddie said, grabbing my arm. When I nodded reluctantly, she smiled. "Awesome. Are you sure you don’t wanna come in and sit with us? They won’t bite, I swear."
It was nice of her to ask, and she did it every day. But I always refused. She didn't get it, but it's just... I didn’t know. Who I was, I guess.
"It's okay. See you soon." I waved, and put my ear buds in again.
There was a secluded spot at the back of the school, behind the building. There were trees surrounding it, so "technically" it was off school grounds, and "technically" we weren't supposed to go there. But "technically", no one gave a shit anyway and I'd pretty much established this spot as mine.
I headed around the side of the building, but before I could get much farther, a voice called my name. Turning, I saw a tall, brown-haired boy hurrying towards me. He wore loose jeans and a red t-shirt that complimented his body. I'd recognize him anywhere. Probably because I'd spent a lot of my daydreaming staring at him.
"Hey, Sean," I said when he got close enough. "What's up?"
"The Skye!" He smiled, showing off his perfect teeth and making my heart melt a little. I loved the way his light blue eyes twinkled when he smiled. "Hey. Wanna have lunch together?"
"Uh, sure." I managed not to stutter. I let him lead me towards the fields, under the shade of a tree. My heart was fluttering, but I tried to calm it down. It's not like this meant anything. We're just friends, eating lunch. Together. Alone. Under a tree.
I shook myself, realizing he was talking. "Had a nice weekend?" he asked.
"Yeah." I nodded. What the hell did I do on my weekend again?
Thankfully, he didn’t ask, instead moving on. "So you got my text right? I wasn’t paying attention in science class, but I mean, who does? Mr. Lyosome puts everyone to sleep. So I need your science notes. Can I borrow it?"
I was kind of disappointed. He only wanted my notes? But then, it wasn’t like I was expecting him to be all romantic and stuff... Though I knew he'd be capable of it. 'Cause he's just that kind of guy.
