Shane’s POV:
“Die, mother----” I cursed colourfully, leaning forward and proceeding to attack the evil ninja in front of me. He didn’t stand a chance.
Just when I had a really good shot, someone blocked the screen. I looked up to see Kevin standing in front of the TV, arms crossed, a rare frown on his face.
“Dude! What the hell! I was about to beat a high score!” As if to prove my point, the game made a ‘game over’ noise.
He didn’t move. “Shane. We need to talk.”
I squinted at him. “Ohmigosh, Kevin!” I said in a high-pitched voice. “Are you breaking up with me?”
Kevin looked confused. “What? No! why would you think that? What did I do?” He looked really panicked.
I rolled my eyes, turning off the game. “Usually when people say ‘we need to talk’, that means they want to end things.” For a player, he was sure inexperienced with relationships. He’s hopeless.
His eyes widened. “Is that what you said to Meghan? Is that like a warning code or something?”
At the mention of her name, I stiffened. “No,” I said shortly. “You only say that when you’re trying to be nice. Even though breakups are almost never nice. Meghan and I, well… I wasn’t exactly trying to be friendly with her, you know?” I glared at the console in my hands.
Kevin nodded. “Yeah, she was always a bit of a bitch. And then, what she did to you-----”
“Kevin. Shut. Up.”
“Okay, okay, shutting up.” He waited a beat, and then decided it was okay to start talking again. “So anyway. We need to… have a conversation?”
I stared at him flatly. “What do you want?”
He pointed at me. “See? There it is again. You’ve been so grumpy these days!”
I threw up my hands. “I’m always like this!”
“No,” he disagreed. “You’re even more of an asshole than usual.”
I glared at him. Then I lunged, and we were chasing each other around the couch. I’d just managed to get him in a headlock when Mike appeared from the kitchen area. He gave us a disapproving look.
“Shane, let go of Kevin,” he commanded, “And Kevin, what did you do to Shane?”
Kevin pouted. “Why do you always think that I did something?”
“Because only you’d go poke the dragon’s eyes while it’s sleeping,” Mike deadpanned.
I nodded in agreement. Then I realized what he’d just said. “Hey!”
“Okay, calm down everybody-----I made cupcakes!” Mike placed the plate of cupcakes on the coffee table with a flourish.
Kevin instantly squealed like a girl and started devouring the little pieces of heaven.
