Skye's POV:

Sighing, I stared up at the sky. Almost summer, and a cloudless sky, soft breeze… it was my kind of perfect night. I loved climbing out onto the roof at night to watch the stars. It was quiet at night, but a different kind of quiet than the awkward silence between dad and I.

"Skye?" Someone's voice called from my room. There was a pause, then a more panicked, "Where are you?"

Rolling my eyes, I crawled over to my window and stuck my head in. "Yo," I said, giving him the peace sign.

"Holy mother of pearls!" Shane jumped back, a hand over his heart. "Where the hell did you pop out from?"

"Uh… my mom?" I gave him a 'duh' expression. I jerked my head. "Come on, up here."

"What's there?" Shane crawled out my window to join me. "Holy crap!" he looked around, his mouth slightly open. "You come up here a lot?"

"Yeah." I shrugged. "It's like my second bedroom." I cocked my head at him. "So… why did you come up here? What happened to the others?"

          "Er… I was using the washroom…?"

"Don't lie, Shane. You could use the downstairs one."

"I couldn’t sleep. Mike snores like a truck going over roadkill."

"Uh-huh," I nodded. "You don’t have to check on me, you know, I won't cut myself. I don't… do it that often," I finished lamely.

Shane looked at me. "But you still do it."

I looked away. "It's nice out tonight," I said, changing the subject. "The stars are all out."

"Yup, you'd notice it now," he said wryly. "I'll let it drop." Shane laid back on the roof. "Hey, the stars are really bright!"

I punched him on the shoulder, laughing, "Glad your eyes are working right, you dumbass." I laid down next to him. We stared up at the sky in comfortable silence.

"It's a bit quiet, eh?" he said suddenly.

"It's night time, of course it's quiet." I thought for a while. Then I started to hum softly. Shane listened quietly at first, then sang the first few lines.

The stars lean down to kiss you

And I lie awake and miss you

Pour me a heavy dose of atmosphere

'Cause I'll doze off safe and soundly

But I'll miss your arms around me

I'd send a postcard to you dear,

'cause I wish you were here

I joined in at the second verse, singing softly to match his scratchier voice.
