READ ON, LOVELY NINJAS!

Skye’s POV:

So went to eat pizza, though I still couldn’t settle down. My brain was being a conniving little beech tree, and my heart was allowing it to play. Was it supposed to feel this way? Was being in a relationship supposed to make you feel so insecure about everything and make you feel like everything could go wrong any moment?

“Skye!”

I blinked, realizing Kevin had been trying to get my attention for the last five minutes. Everyone was looking at me with various degrees of concern. “Sorry, what?”

“I said, we already ordered for you,” Kevin repeated slowly, as if I was a toddler that didn’t speak English.

“Okay,” I mumbled. Suddenly, I glanced back up again. “Wait, what did you guys order?” Not pepperoni, not pepperoni, not pepperoni…

“Hawaiian,” said Shane, not looking away from his gaze out the window. “Because you hate pepperoni.” His arms were crossed and he slouched in his seat across from me, looking very much like a storm cloud. A moody, super-hot, talented storm cloud, but still.

“Oh.” I couldn’t help the relief in my voice. It’s not that pepperoni was so horrible or anything, it’s just every time we got pizza, Sean always ordered pepperoni. I was surprised Shane picked up on that fact.

I went back to over-thinking (my new hobby!) while Kevin and Maddie flirted beside me. Mike was back to texting his mystery person, while Shane was being his moody self. I twirled a silver strand of my hair absently.

“New colour,” commented Shane suddenly.

I blinked at him. “What?”

He rolled his eyes at my spacey-ness. He pointed at my head. “You changed your hair.”

My hand reached up to touch it instinctively, because he was right; I went and re-streaked my hair the day I woke up next to Shane on the couch. I’d had the new black and blue/purple/silver hair for a week now. He was the only one other than Maddie to say something about it.

“Yeah,” I shrugged. “Guess I wanted a change.”

“Huh.”

We both went back to staring out the window until the pizza arrived.

It’s a painful and awkward hour of chewing pizza crusts and avoiding certain glances before Maddie got her Kevin fix done and decided to spare the rest of us. She dragged me to her car, and I slumped in the passenger seat, glad to get away from Shane’s dark eyes and the whole pizza atmosphere. I never thought I’d say this but: I was getting real sick of pizza.

“Skye.”

I turned to see Maddie fixing me with her best tell-me-what’s-wrong-or-I’ll-do-some-voodoo-on-your-doll look (…Okay, maybe not that serious or dark. This is Maddie, after all.) I groaned slightly.

“You’ve been spacey ever since the gig!” she began. “I mean, okay, I sort of dragged you along, but you like HCS, and you’re usually happy with Shane---” She continued over my protests, “but today you’re just sad. What’s wrong? Is it because of Sean?”

I stared at her. Was it because of him? Or was it just my own thoughts?

Maddie frowned when I didn’t answer her. “Skye, tell me, did you and Sean have a fight or something?”
