Skye’s POV:

I moved, rolling onto my back. Or, I tried to. My senses suddenly flared to life, waking me up. Pillows weren’t warm and muscular, were they? I was pretty sure pillows didn’t… breathe. My eyes snapped open, and I realized my head was on somebody’s chest. And that somebody’s arms were wrapped around my waist. Guess who that was?

Shane shifted beneath me, my head moving up and down with his chest as he breathed deeply. For a moment, my eyes drifted shut again, because it felt good in his arms… What was I thinking? I was probably still half-asleep. Yeah, that was it.

I tried to pull back, but his arms tightened around me. Hmm, why did that seem so familiar? Jeez, this guy had a strong grip. And he’s asleep! I sighed, and then slapped Shane. He was startled awake, his breathing a sudden burst and his arms flailing wildly.

“Wha---? What’s going on?”

I couldn’t stop myself laughing from the look on his face. It was comical, his eyes blinking wide in surprise. When he saw me laughing at him, he calmed down and scowled at me.

“You just had to wake me up by giving me a heart attack?” he accused.

I shook my head, still laughing uncontrollably. I tried to move off him, but being the stubborn idiot he was, he only held onto me tighter.

“Hey, I’m getting a sense of déjà vu here,” he said, smirking slowly. “Though if I get to wake up to your face every morning, I’m not complaining.”

“Who are you, Kevin?” I retorted.  Then I realized what he’d said. “Oh, crap, it’s morning? I fell asleep here?”

“Uh… I guess.” He finally let me go, stretching his arms in a yawn.

I sat up too, looking around. Then I noticed something. “Where are mike and Kevin?” No wonder it was quiet. The other two were nowhere to be seen. I doubted they were both in the bedroom, or the bathroom.

Shane looked around, too. “Huh. They must’ve gone out to get breakfast.”

“Oh.”

There was an awkward pause. I excused myself to go to the bathroom, just to escape the silence. How was it that silence could envelop a room, fall in between two people, yet make it feel like too much was said?

I came back to find Shane missing from the couch as well. For a moment, I didn’t know what to do, and then I heard the music. Soft but distinct piano notes filled the air, and I turned around to see Shane sitting at the piano. He hadn’t noticed me yet, and he seemed a bit lost in thought as he depressed particular chords.

“You play?” I asked, walking up to him.

He looked up at me, startled. “Uh, yeah. I used to have lessons, before I ran---I mean, left home.” He looked down at his fingers as they pressed random keys. “My brother used to play too, so we had a grand piano at home, not an upright like this one…” He frowned at the ivory keys, bangs in his eyes. “Then Seamus quit, I guess he liked sports better. But I kept up with it. Not sure why, but I did. I liked playing wordless songs… It was a way to escape, I guess, the constant fighting they did. They were fighting all the time, even then. And then…” His fingers struck an ominous-sounding chord. “They cut off the lessons. No reasons, no excuses, I just came home one day and they just… stopped it. That was the time they really started going at each other. I guess that’s why Seamus applied for school on the other side of the country.” Shane snorted bitterly, taking his fingers off the keys.
