Skye’s POV:

Humming a tune I came up with after performing with the dudes yesterday, I sat in class on Thursday, feeling kind of happy. I didn’t know why. Maybe because of the thrill of performing on an actual stage hadn’t fully faded yet. Or maybe I was just looking forward to my date on Friday… with Sean. Sigh. Still couldn’t believe he asked me out. Finally!

Maddie sat down next to me. “Hey, Skye. Whoa, you’re… glowing,” she told me, smiling in amusement. “It’s almost blinding. What’s up?”

“Huh, oh, nothing!” I said, grinning like a doofus.

“Let me guess,” she teased. “Someone tall, with brown hair and blue eyes, goes by the name Sean? The one you have a date with?”

“Shut up, Maddie.” But I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

“Fine,” she laughed. Her eyes suddenly lit up. “Hey, did you hear? HardCoreSouls performed last night! In this café in the city. And they had----wait for it---- a guest singer! So cool. I don’t know who it is, though. The picture on the internet was really bad quality…”

“Oh…” I looked away. Should I tell her?

“Skye, you know what this means?” She looked at me with big eyes, trying to mind-beam me the message.

“You’re going to drag me to more of their shows?” I guessed.

“N—okay, yeah, that too,” she nodded. “But this means you can sing with them! If we manage to catch them again, they can invite you up there and perform! Skye this is your chance!”

“Chance for what?” I said warily.

“Fame! Expressing your music with others! Getting close to the guys!”

“I don’t need that,” I pointed out. “I have Sean, remember?” Okay, he wasn’t mine yet, but whatever. “You don’t need me to get closer to Kevin, Maddie, you can do that on your own.”

She looked appalled. “I didn’t mean---- I thought----Skye----”

I sighed. “It’s okay, Maddie. We’ll see.”

She smiled. “Yay!”

“Hi, dad,” I said as I passed his study.

“Hi, Skye,” he said back after a beat, eyes never leaving the screen. “How’s, uh, school?”

“Great,” I said brightly, “We pranced around on our ponies and Dumbledore came and swore at us and Miley Cyrus taught us how to pole dance!”

“That’s nice,” he replied absentmindedly. “Be careful who you make friends with.”
