"Who are you?" She whispered, looking into my eyes like she had never seen me before.
"Brinley, that's Shawn." Julie walked closer to the bed.
"Mom?" She said like a question, and Julie nodded and bent to her level.
"Yes sweetie, it's mom. You don't remember Shawn?"
She shook her head, looking between both of us.
"Who are we?" Ethan asked, testing her memory.
She smiled a little bit, which made me happy. "Ethan and Grayson." I watched as their smiles lit up on their faces as she said their names.
I can't believe she doesn't remember me.. My heart is shattered.
"Brin.. You really don't remember me? We met almost a year ago at a meet and greet. We just went on tour together.." I tried to explain, feeling my heart break more and more as a confused expression stayed on her face.
"I toured?" She asked, looking down in disbelief.
"Yes.." I whispered, making it obvious that I was upset. I wasn't trying to make it obvious, I know it's not her fault that she can't remember me.
Cameron and Nash walked closer to the bed.
"Do you remember us?" Cameron asked, and she tried to remember as best she could, but shook her head no.
That's when the doctor walked in, and we filled her in on everything that has happened.
"Well it's not surprising that the fall caused her to have memory loss." She explained.
"But she remembers everyone except for three of the boys." Julie told the doctor, who didn't look confused at all.
"People she hasn't known for very long may be too hard for her to remember. Who has known her the longest out of the three boys she doesn't remember?" the doctor looked between us.
"She has known me for almost a year" I felt my eyes getting glossy.
The doctor nodded her head and wrote something down on her clipboard.
"And everyone she remembers she has known for longer than that?" She questioned.
We all nodded our head, and Jessie said "yes she has known the rest of us her whole life."
The doctor had an expression that showed that she knew exactly what was happening.
"So she doesn't remember people that she hasn't known for a long period of time, or things that happened not very long ago. I hate to say this, but this could be permanent. Luckily you don't have to reteach her everything, just what has happened within the past year."
As soon as she said that, my heart stopped and I stood up from the chair I was sitting in.
"I can't teach her to love me again." I said quietly before walking out of the hospital room.
-
I sat in the waiting room, face in my hands trying to calm myself down.
After about 10 minutes, everyone walked out of her room and back over to me.
Grayson sat down next to me, and wrapped his arm around my shoulder.
"I'm so sorry bro.." he said quietly, sniffling a little bit.
I just shook my head to signal 'whatever'. There's nothing I can do about it now. I feel so lost and broken.
"She's coming home today if that makes you feel any better." Nash added.
I took a deep breath. "I'm glad she's gonna be home safe and sound."
I stood up and grabbed my stuff.
"Text me when she gets home and I'll come visit her" I said to Noah, and he nodded.
I walked out of the hospital, and heard footsteps behind me.
It was Cameron and Nash.
"Shawn, I am so so so sorry. I can't even put how sorry I am into words." Cameron had tears in his eyes. I knew he was sorry, and I still don't blame him for any of this.
"Stop blaming yourself Cameron. We can't change what happened now. She doesn't remember me and she probably never will. I just need to clear my head."
Cameron nodded, before pulling out his car keys and holding them in the air.
"Wanna go get some Starbucks and then drive for a while?"
I said yes since I have nowhere else to go anyways, and it'll be nice to spend some more time with him and Nash.
I hope I can just forget about everything, just like she did..
