You and Will are riding horseback down an unpaved road.
"Do I look even more beautiful with my hair blowing majestically in the wind?" He yells over to you, trying to make light of the situation.
"Loads!" You shout back, a smile on your lips.
Moments later, he skids his horse to a stop and jumps off before the horse has time to recover, dropping to the ground and clutching his chest.
You can't stop your horse in time to stop beside him, so you have to turn around and clamber uncomfortably off of it in your dress. "Will? What's wrong?" You demand. You don't see a reason for stopping. Jem's life is at stake.
He pulls his hand away, and you see blood. Your eyes widen, and he starts unbuttoning his shirt. He pulls it back to show a bloody line through his Parabatai rune.
"Jem..." You say softly, tears pricking your eyes.
You hold onto the horses as he gets up and walks over to a tree. You watch him bury something, and advert your eyes as he kneels. Tears continue to stream down your face as he makes his way back over to you.
"There's no point in continuing. You go back to the Institute. I'm going to go for a ride."
"I'm coming." You say.
"No, it's okay. I'll be fine."
"No you won't be. You'll go do something dangerous and get yourself killed." You grip at his hand.
"Yes, I shall endeavor to get myself killed. I want to die." He meets your eyes as tears begin streaming down his face. "My God, Jem..." He chokes out.
You start crying harder as his tears come, because he's Will Herondale, and Will Herondale doesn't deserve any more pain. He reaches out for you, almost unconsciously. You hold onto him, trying to comfort him, but knowing there was nothing you, nor anybody else, could do.
"This isn't fair." He says.
"No." You agree.
A carriage comes by and stops. "Excuse me? Are you okay? Do you need help?" A woman asks.
Will lets you go and looks at the woman. "Fuck off." He says sharply. "Get the fuck away."
You eyes widen. "Will!"
Will turns away and walks over to the tree he had so recently left.
"I'm sorry." You say to the woman who was getting haughtily back in her carriage. "His pa--his brother died." You explain.
Her expression softens a bit. "It's all right. My condolences."
You go back over to Will, and he's stopped crying. "I don't want to die." He admits.
"You don't?" You ask, shocked.
"No. I would, and I'd kill myself too, but I can't bloody leave you."
"Is now really the time to confess your love?"
"It's now or never. Take it or leave it." His gaze doesn't waver from yours as he awaits your response. "Never mind--" he begins, but you interrupt.
"I love you too, Will."
