As James Potter's best friend--aside from Sirius, of course--you never say anything (besides teasing. How could you refrain?) about his infatuation with Lily Evans. You pretend like it doesn't bother you.
All.
The.
Time.
"What's the matter with you?" James asks, as he always does when you make a cold comment.
"Nothing." You shrug.
"I think it's somebody's time of the month." Sirius makes a show of patting your back comfortingly.
"I'm not on my period, asshole." You roll your eyes.
"Hey, Y/N?" Remus asks, coming over.
"Yeah?" You gratefully turn to him.
"Sirius bet me five galleons I can't get you to kiss me."
"Your point?" You sigh. This is what you get for being friends with a bunch of idiot males, you guess.
"You don't want him to get my money, do you?"
"I guess not." You laugh.
"You aren't seriously--" Sirius began. He cuts off when you kiss Remus. "Well." He says.
"Okay. You can stop now." James says.
"Pay him, Black." You say as you break off the kiss.
"I really thought you wouldn't do it." Sirius says, looking awestruck as he digs around in his pockets. "You know, I bet James you wouldn't kiss me--"
"Can it, Black. I'm not kissing you."
"So you'll snog Remus, but won't kiss me?"
"Yep, pretty much. Who knows where that mouth has been?"
"You expected her to believe that, Padfoot?" James asked. "I'm supposed to protect her, not give her diseases."
Yes. Protect you. Because you're friends.
"You guys are so mean." Sirius says dramatically as he hands Remus some coins.
"What's your deal, James?" You ask at dinner that night.
"Nothing." He mutters.
"Stressed about the Quidditch match tomorrow?" Peter asks in his sweet way.
"Quidditch match?" James asks, and everybody looks at him. Even Lily spares him a concerned glance. "Oh. Quidditch match. Right." James says.
"Are you okay?" You furrow your eyebrows.
"Yes. Fine. Why?"
"Well, you forgot about the Quidditch match. And Lily's sitting three seats away and you haven't mentioned her."
"Oh. I'm fine. Hey, Evans." He waves offhandedly.
"Potter." She says, watching him. Even she looks worried, and she doesn't care.

James Potter takes his Quidditch seriously. It isn't like him to be late for a match, especially one against Slytherin. You, Sirius, Remus and Peter go to look for him. Marlene comes too, but she and Sirius mysteriously disappear somewhere along the way.
If you were James Potter, where would you go?
The Quidditch pitch, obviously. But he isn't there. Next option.
While Remus and Peter veer off the check the common room and their dorm, you go to the library. He goes there quite frequently (just under the Invisibility Cloak so that no one would see him). "James?" You ask, and immediately get shushed.
"Y/N. I was looking for you." James steps out from behind a shelf. "Where have you been?"
"At the Quidditch pitch. Why are you not there?" You demand.
"I was looking for you. Why were you there?"
"I was there to watch the game, but there can't be the game without you, Potter. Let's go."
"Wait, wait." He grabs your hand as you turn around to go.
"What, James?" You ask impatiently.
"I was looking for you. I need to talk to you--"
"After, James. People are waiting."
"But--"
"James, you have to go."
"Fine. After."
Five minutes into the game, James gets hit on the head with a bludger and falls off his broom. All those times he'd assured you that that wouldn't happen, and then it does.
You and Remus sit in the hospital wing while Peter goes to find Sirius. He and Marlene are still nowhere to be found.
Just as Peter and Sirius are coming in, James wakes up. "Y/N. I need to talk to her. I--" He says vehemently. Then again, he speaks vehemently naturally. He's always excited.
"I'm here, James. What do you need? Calm down or Madame Pomfrey--"
"I love you." He blurts out. "I love you, Y/N."
"James..." You sigh.
"I know. I know what you're thinking. I'm not in love with Evans, though. I never have been. It's always been you." He says quickly.
"James--"
"I know. I know. But it's true. I know that now. Why didn't you tell me this?" He asks Remus.
"You never asked." Remus says.
"I love you, Y/N. I do." James reaches out for you.
"I don't believe you." You sigh. It's too good to be true.
"You should. Bloody hell."
You look at Remus, trusting his opinion. He nods. "All right." You say.
"All right? I confess my love to you and that's all you have to say?"
"I... like you."
"You'll love me. Just wait." He says with a grin.
