Umbridge's class is the worst. That was saying something, considering all the years they'd had of Snape's Potions classes.
Umbridge is giving a lecture in her irritatingly fake-sweet voice. "...Certain... half-human creatures," she says, looking pointedly at Rebekah, "Shouldn't be allowed in ordinary wizard societies, as they are dangerous and unclean--"
"Shut up." Rebekah says, much louder than was needed in the nearly silent classroom.
"Excuse me?" Umbridge raises her eyebrows.
She stands. "I said to shut up, you filthy little--" A hand flies over her mouth, muffling her next words.
Fred had stood up beside her. "Hey. Careful." He whispers in her ear.
"Detention. Sit down."
Only Rebekah didn't want to sit down. She wanted to punch a certain pink-clad woman in the teeth.
"Mr. Weasley, please retake your seat as well." Umbridge says.
Fred retakes his seat and looks up expectingly at his girlfriend.
Rebekah takes a deep breath, balls her fists, and sits back down.
"As I was saying," Umbridge continues, plastering on her stupid smile, "Uncivilized creatures--"
"He's more civilized than you, you insufferable bitch!" Rebekah stands up again, angry tears burning in her eyes.
"Do you want more detention?" Umbridge asks with an exaggerated sigh.
"What I want is--"
Fred's hand covers her mouth again. "It isn't worth it." He whispers.
"Mr. Weasley, I ask that you remain seated." Umbridge says.
"I am seated." George says from the back.
"I'll give you detention too, if you don't tame that mouth of yours." Umbridge threatens. She turns her attention back to Rebekah. "Unless you have something reasonable to say, please resume your seat or exit my classroom."
"Don't have to tell me twice." She grabs her books and storms out, trying to push back her tears, at least until she gets out of the room.
She stops a few doors down and slams her books onto the floor, pressing the balls of her hands to her eyes. "Stop crying." She hisses to herself. "Just because your teacher's a--"
"Talking to yourself, babe?" Fred asks.
She removes her hands from her eyes. "Shut up." She says, but starts crying.
He wraps her in his arms, kissing the top of her head. "It's all right."
"I hate her! She calls Moony 'uncivilized!' Has she met herself?! She's a fucking monster if there ever was one!"
"You're right." He agrees. "I know it's hard to put up with, but you're just going to have to try. I'm sorry." He says gently.
"I know. It just pisses me off. Merlin, I want to strangle that bitch."
"Don't we all? On the bright side, we have detention together."
"She gave you detention for following me?"
"Yep. It'll be fun."
"If detention is what you consider fun."
"Anything can be fun if you make it."

He was wrong.
Professor Umbridge's office was chalk full off porcelain plates with kittens on them, constantly meowing.
And she wanted Rebekah and Fred to polish them all.
Five hours of listening to the meowing. Five. Hours.
"... We could sing." Fred suggests.
"Shut up."
He sings anyways. "'Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hoggy Warty Hogwarts...'"
She joins in, just to try to make it louder, to drown out the cats a bit.
She had liked cats before that day.

Neville and Luna approach Rebekah, Fred and George one day. "We're going to help Harry." Luna says in her ditzy little voice. "Would you three like to join us?"
"Of course." The three of them chorus.
And, of course, as it generally was with Harry Potter involved, things took a turn for the worse. Death Eaters showed up just seconds after the students had, and Voldemort wasn't far behind.
Luckily, Order members had been tipped off, and they showed too.
Dumbledore and Voldemort had a duel, but most everything else was just a jumbled mess until she saw it.
Bellatrix shouts a spell, and the next thing anybody sees is Sirius Black falling backwards through the veil.
"Padfoot!" Rebekah screams at the top of her lungs. The sound is painful to everybody who hears--even the Death Eaters freeze. She runs toward the veil.
"Rebekah!" Fred yells, running towards her from across the room.
He gets to her, about ten feet away from the veil.
How was her father gone? How could this be true?
"No!" Harry's screaming.
George has grabbed him, refusing to let him go, even as he struggles.
Fred grabs Rebekah. The force of the impact spins them around and sends them both tumbling to the ground. She scrambles to try to get up, but Fred pulls her back down, bear hugging her and refusing to let go. She's sobbing, and his heart is breaking for her, and there's nothing he can do to help.
Eventually she stops struggling and lays limply in his arms, her only movements the involuntary wracking that always accompanies uncontrolled sobbing. After a while, Fred stands, picking her up bridal style.
When they get back to the school, Rebekah is taken to McGonagall's office. Fred sits beside her, her hand in his.
"How am I gonna tell Moony?" She asks quietly, looking over at him.
His response is a kiss on the forehead.
"Fred." She says, her voice coming out choked. That means she wants him to use words, and he recognizes it.
"You'll figure it out. I'll come with you."
She nods, starting to cry again.
"Be sure to add in that he punched Lucius Malfoy. Sirius'd want that told." Fred adds.
She cries harder, but she's smiling a bit now, because he's exactly right.
"I'm sorry I took so long." McGonagall says, coming into the room. "I was trying to get everything sorted out. I'll write a letter to your father, and you can go see him tomorrow, if you'd like."
"No." She says.
They both look at her.
"I want to tell him--I need to."
"Very well." McGonagall agrees. "Will Mr. Weasley be accompanying you?"
"Yes, please. If that's okay."
"Of course."

They take the train back to London the next day. Rebekah sleeps the whole way, curled up against Fred. He doesn't move the whole ride.
They take a bus or two to her house, and she leads the way inside.
"Moony?" She calls, her voice cracking.
"Rebekah?" Remus demands coming into the foyer from the kitchen, sounding accusing. "What do you think you're doing out of school?"
"Moony, can I talk to you?" She asks in a choked voice.
Remus' expression shifts to one of concern, and it only deepens when she starts crying, and Fred has to grab her to keep her from turning and walking back out the door.
"Yeah, sure, baby." Remus stammers out shakily.
She grabs Fred with one hand, her father with the other, and pulls them both into the living room. She gestures for Remus to sit.
"Sit down, baby. I'll make you tea--" Remus says, looking significantly distressed. The moody teenage girl things had always been Sirius' portion of parenting, since he handled feelings better than Remus. Consequently, Remus had no experience, but his mother had always made him tea when he was upset, so that must be the right thing, right?
"You sit." Rebekah chokes out, almost unintelligibly, through her tears.
"Rebekah, sweetheart--"
She grabs his hand again and pulls him down onto the couch, sitting down with him.
Fred sits beside her, angling himself so he could face Remus. He slips his hand into her free hand.
Remus is looking at him for explanation, so Fred looks away.
"Rebekah, tell me what's wrong."
Rebekah presses her hand to her mouth and turns her face into Fred's shirt, sobbing and unable to talk.
Thus far, he hadn't cried in front of her, but his voice cracks as he asks if she wants him to tell Remus. She nods vigorously.
Fred twists his fingers in her hair, nervous for probably the first time in his life. "Um, well, what she's meaning to say..." He begins in a very unsteady voice.
"Somebody tell me what's going on." Remus demands.
Knowing Remus as the two of them do, they know a million thoughts are going through his head, not a one of them good. Somebody had to man up and say it.
"You're aware that the Order had to come save our arses?" Fred begins.
"Yes." Remus says, his anxiety seeping out into his voice.
Rebekah's crying gets louder and, if possible, less controlled. It takes all the energy she has to focus on what Fred says.
"Spit it out." Remus says.
"And... well... Sirius didn't make it." Fred says, and he starts crying.
Rebekah sits up to look at her father, but he's just staring blankly at the two of them. "What?" He asks, his voice hoarse. "That's impossible."
"I'm sorry, Remus." Fred manages to choke out.
At his choked voice, Rebekah jerks her head to look at him. When she sees he's crying too, she almost loses it. She gets up to run out, but Fred pulls her back before her feet touch the ground.
"Are you sure?" Remus asks quietly.
"Yes."
"Where's his body, then?"
"There isn't one. There was... a veil... and he... he fell through it. Dumbledore'd know more..."
And then Remus starts to cry.
"I'll be outside." Fred says.
Rebekah launches herself into her father's arms. She can't watch him cry.
A pretty good while later, Remus comes out to invite Fred back inside, telling the two of them to stay for dinner.
It goes without saying, but the dinner is one of sad silence and hastily wiped tears.
"He punched Lucius Malfoy." Rebekah says, tears stinging her eyes.
"What?" Remus asks.
"Padfoot punched Lucius Malfoy in the face." She says, and laughs a bit.
Moony replicates her laugh, but it sounds eerily hollow, and it terrifies her. But she's his daughter, and he has to be strong. "I bet his hair flew majestically." He adds.
"It did." Fred agrees.
It feels good to laugh, to all of them.
That evening, Rebekah's curled up, asleep on the couch, her head on her father's lap. Her father stares at a spot on the floor.
"Mr. Lupin?" Fred asks.
"Don't call me mister." He looks up.
"Sorry. It felt appropriate for what I was following it with."
Remus gives a skeptical look. "Okay..."
"I know it's kind of inopportune..." Fred clears his throat. "But, uh..."
"Yes, you can ask her to marry." Remus says.
"Really? Wow. That was easier than I'd thought."
Remus gives a little smile. "I think you make her happy. Thank you for all you've done for her."
"Nothing to thank me for." Fred shrugs it off.
"I'm entrusting you to love her unconditionally and protect her."
"I want nothing more."
"I just ask that you wait until you're both done with school."
"Of course. I doubt she'd have it any other way."
"Of course."
"Thank you, Remus."
"Thank you, Fred."
