"Goodnight." James says, kissing you.
"Goodnight. Love you." You smile.
"I know." He smiles, and walks off.
Now, generally, you don't have a problem with answers like that.
But then he goes over and starts talking to Lily Evans.
You don't mind him talking to girls, not in the least. You couldn't care less if one of his friends were girls, or even if all of his friends were girls. You wouldn't even mind him talking to Lily. You like her, everybody does. You don't mind him being friends with her.
What you do mind, though, is how close they're getting. It's far too close for your comfort.
He stays with Lily for a good fifteen minutes. That's longer than he's spoken to you all day.
Eventually, though, they hug, and he leaves.
At least they have the decency not to snog right there in front of you.
Not that you're bitter or anything, of course.
Why hadn't you gotten a hug?
Granted you'd gotten a kiss, but hugs are better.
"Uh-oh. Someone looks angry. Trouble in paradise, Y/L/N?" Sirius Black asks as he waltzes over to you.
"No. I'm going to bed, though. 'Night." You stand up and start to walk away.
"Where's my hug, lady? You're depriving me of my God-given right--"
"I don't think hugs are unalienable rights, but..." You say, giving him a hug.
"I beg to differ. Sleep well."
"You too. Goodnight Remus, goodnight Peter." You smile.
Sirius clears his throat.
"What?" All three of you ask.
"Where are their hugs? What's that term you used?"
"Unalienable." Remus informs him, standing to give you a hug. "Goodnight, Y/N."
"'Night." You smile. When you've withdrawn from Remus, you lean down to give Peter a hug. "'Night, Pete."
"Goodnight." He smiles.

"We're friends, Y/N! Friends." James says.
"Bullshit! James, I'm tired of this! I'm tired of it all." You yell back.
You've dated him for a year, and what have you gotten? A whole lot of nothing. Lily Evans has been around for less than a month and what did she get? Everything.
"You're just jealous, Y/N. There's no reason for us to be having this argument." He says calmly.
"You're right. It isn't, but may I add that you started this argument?" You snap angrily.
"Do you want to take a break, Y/N?" He asks, sounding just as angry.
No, you don't.
"Yes, as a matter of fact I do." You say, tears burning your eyes. "I'll see you later, James."
"No, Y/N. That's not what I meant. Y/N--"
"Bye, James." You repeat, and walk away.
"Y/N!"
Not to sound bitter or anything, but he can just go to to Lily for whatever the hell he wants.

"Is something wrong, Y/N?" Remus asks as you're studying on the couch in the common room a few days later.
"Not in the least. Why?"
"Well, you've been crying for three days, and you haven't spoken to James for a while either."
Sirius sits beside you and puts his arm around you.
And, of course, you start crying again. You had just stopped.
"What did James do?" He asks accusingly.
"Nothing. I think I screwed up."
"Oh, yes. You did." Sirius assures you.
"Padfoot!" Remus snaps. "Go away.
"But--"
Remus points.
"It's okay, Y/N. James loves you. I'm sure you'll work things out." Sirius kisses your forehead and makes his way over to Peter.
Remus takes his seat. "Sorry."
"It's fine." You smile a bit. It never matters what Sirius says, it always makes you feel better.
"He's right about that last part, though. James does love you."
"Where is he, by the way? I haven't seen him. He hasn't gone and gotten himself killed or anything, has he?"
"No, he hasn't. He's up in the dormitory. You should go talk to him."
"No. He's angry."
"No he isn't."
"Okay, fine. I'm angry."
"No you aren't."
"Shut up, Lupin."
He smiles a bit. "Go on. Go talk to him. Tell him you're sorry and you love him. It's all he wants to hear."
"He doesn't love me." You start crying again.
"Of course he loves you!" Sirius pops up from behind the couch, making both you and Remus jump. "He does everything for you, and you're not even shagging him."
"Go away, Sirius." You both say.
He stalks away with a glare.
"He's right, though. Go on." Remus prompts.
"Thanks." You hug him.
"Sure."
"Thanks, Black!" You call across the room.
"You're welcome!" He screams back, much more loudly than necessary.
You go up to James' dormitory.
He's sitting on his bed with his broom in his lap, polishing it as he does every Friday night.
But it's Thursday.
"Hey." You say quietly.
He looks up, setting his broom aside and scrambling up. "Hey, Y/N. I was just cleaning my broom. Not moping or missing anybody. Not at all."
"Casual."
"I know."
"May I come in?"
"Yeah. Sure. Yeah." He nods vigorously, moving his things off his bed. "Have a seat. Why are your eyes red? Have you been crying? Are you all right?"
"I'm fine." You walk over, but don't sit down. "I just wanted to apologize."
"Don't do that. You were right."
"No, I wasn't."
"You're always right--I've missed you, Y/N. So much. I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry, James."
"I won't talk to Lily." He reaches out and takes both of your hands in his.
"No, don't do that. I don't mind it."
"Then why were you angry?"
"I just don't like when you talk to her more than you talk to me."
"Do you want the truth?"
"Yes. Yes, I want the truth." You say, even though you aren't completely sure. This sounds like it could be horrible.
"So, you do forgive me?"
"Yes. Do you forgive me?"
"Of course." He leans forward and kisses you.
"What's the truth, James?" You ask nervously.
"She was helping me with something."
You raise your eyebrows. He had better mean homework.
"I was gonna wait to tell you..."
He isn't easing your anxiety.
"She was helping me pick this out." He reaches under his pillow and pulls out a small box.
Your eyebrows raise more.
He opens the box. "And, you know, since my secret's out..." He drops down to one knee. "Will you marry me?"
