"What's wrong?" Gerard asks.
"Nothing." You shrug. "Why?"
"You look sad."
"I'm not."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah." You give him a reassuring smile. "Everything's good. Can we go to the park?"
"Sure."
Gerard drives you to the park and goes immediately to the swing set, because he knows that's where you want to go.
"Hey, I'll be back." He says after you've been there for a bit.
"You're leaving?"
"I'll be right back."
"Can I come with you?"
"Nope."
"I'll look weird swinging on a swing set all by myself."
"Trust me, you look weirder here with me." He laughs. "I have a surprise for you. Just wait here, I'll be back."
While he's gone, a little girl runs up to you. "Hi!" She smiles.
"Hi." You smile back.
"I'm Amy."
"Nice to meet you, Amy. I'm Y/N."
"Your hair's pretty. Blue's my favorite color."
"Thanks." You smile.
"Can I touch it?"
You get off the swing and kneel down in the mulch for her to touch it.
She pets your hair. "Ooh, it's soft."
"Thanks." You smile. "Your hair's pretty too."
"Do you wanna touch it?" She tilts her head.
You touch it. "Soft." You say.
"Thank you. Mommy brushed it before we left. Can I swing with you?"
"If you want to. Where's your mommy?"
She hops up on the swing beside the one you just vacated. "She's on the slide with my bubby. Can you start me?"
You give her a push to start her.
"Thank you. How did you make your hair blue?"
"Hair dye." You answer, getting back on your swing.
"The blanket on my bed is that color."
"Really?"
"Yeah. It's my favorite."
"Mine too."
"You're pretty."
"Thanks. So are you."
When Gerard returns, Amy's still there with you.
"Lookie, a puppy!" Amy says.
You look where she's pointing to see Gerard with a puppy.
"Where did you get that?" You ask when he's close enough.
"The pet store."
You smile and get off the swing to pet the puppy. "What's the puppy's name?"
"Oscar." He says.
"Hi." Amy tells Gerard.
"Hey there." Gerard smiles.
"Your hair's pretty." She says.
"Thanks."
"Can I touch it?"
He kneels to let her touch his hair.
"He's pretty too." Amy tells you as she climbs back onto the swing.
Gerard gives you a grin.
"Why'd you get a puppy?" You ask. "Can we keep him?"
"Well, yeah. I got him, didn't I?" He smiles. "Do you like him?"
"Yeah." You pick Oscar up and hug him to you.
"Amy!" A woman says, coming over and picking Amy up off the swing. "What did I tell you about strangers?"
"But Momma, their hair." Amy says.
"No. Don't talk to strangers." She tells her daughter, then turns to you. "I'm sorry about her. She has a mind of her own."
"It's okay. She's good company." You smile, even though she's glaring at you.
The lady gives you a fake smile. "Yes, well. It's time to go, Amy--"
Amy wriggles from her mother's arms and runs to hug you. "Mommy doesn't like colored hair." She whispers in your ear. "But I think it's pretty."
"Thanks." You smile and hug her back.
"Amy." Her mother says.
Amy lets you go and hugs Gerard.
"Amelia!"
Gerard kneels to hug her back.
"Amelia! Get over here right now."
Amy kisses Gerard's cheek and goes to her mother.
"Heathens." The woman says as she drags her daughter away.
Gerard laughs, and you have to join in.
"And look at that, you're smiling now." He smiles.
"You got me a puppy because you thought I was sad, even though I told you I wasn't?"
"Yep. Pretty much."
Still holding the dog, you smile and stand to kiss his cheek. "You're wonderful."
"I am, aren't I?"
You laugh. "You are."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
