"Come with me." You tell Sirius.
He gives you an untrusting look. "Where?"
"Just come." You smile.
"No."
"Come on, Black." Lily says.
"I don't think so." He shakes his head and starts to walk away.
"Has it ever occurred to you that you have some serious trust issues?" You ask, grabbing his hand to prevent his departure.
"Yes, it has. If I didn't, I'd be actually dating somebody by now." He informs you. "I'm not coming unless you tell me where we're going."
"No, but I'll give you a hint." Lily says. "It involves James."
".... Fine." He sighs. "Lead the way."
Lily grabs his other hand, and you both pull him along.
You pull him into the entrance to the kitchens.
"Happy birthday!" James, Remus, Peter and Marlene chorus.
Sirius' expression changes for the brighter as James puts a glass of Firewhiskey in his hand. "Thanks." Sirius smiles.
"Come sit." Peter says.
The three of you join them at a table and some house elves bring some food. James thanks them graciously.
"I'd like to propose a toast." James stands.
"Sit down, Potter." Lily advises.
"Shut up, Lils. I'm not drunk."
"Fine." She holds her hands up in surrender.
"Not everybody can go through what you've been through and be who you are." James says. "You're the most 'dogged' person I know." He says with a wink, making the Marauders laugh behind their hands and you, Lily and Marlene roll your eyes. "But, in all Sirius-ness, you're one of the best people I know, and I couldn't ask for a better best friend. Cheers." James finishes.
"That was a stag-gering speech, mate." Sirius jokes to hide his discomfort at the praise as everyone clinks their glasses.

You, Lily and Marlene sit in the Great Hall at breakfast the next morning. One by one, the Marauders join until only Sirius is missing.
"He's fixing his hair." Peter mumbles in explanation.
"Told you guys we should've done without the Firewhiskey." You say.
"Shut up." He says.
"Do you guys ever learn?" Remus asks.
"No." James assures him, grinning. He and Sirius had stayed up all night.
The doors burst open and Sirius walks in. "Can I have everyone's attention, please?" He yells.
"Really should've done without the Firewhiskey." Marlene sighs.
Everyone looks at Sirius.
"Where are you, Y/N? Oh, there you are. Come here." He says loudly.
"Somebody kill me." You hiss.
James shoves you out of your seat. You poke him in the side in retaliation and he busts out laughing, getting everyone's attention.
Professor McGonagall starts to stand up, but when you make eye contact with her, she sits back down.
"I have a question." Sirius tells you.
You respond by pushing him out the doors. "You idiot!" You snap.
"What?"
"Do you want detention?"
He shrugs. "It's like a home away from home."
"You're going to get in trouble."
"It's worth it."
"Go to bed--and take James with you."
"Well, I'd rather take--"
"Don't you dare say me."
"Okay, I won't say you. May I ask my question?"
"No."
"Will you go out with me?"
"I refuse to have this conversation right now."
"Then give an answer and we'll talk later."
"If I say yes, will you shut up?"
"Yes."
"Yes." You say.
He grins and pulls you back into the Great Hall. Everyone stares. "She said yes." He informs them, and they clap and whistle.
You drag him to the Gryffindor table.
He and James mess around, Peter tells them to shut up, and the rest of you roll your eyes.
"Hey, what do you call someone with one eye?" James asks Lily.
"I don't know, what?"
"A cyclops."
He and Sirius laugh. Marlene gives a little chuckle too.
"Someone remind me why I'm dating him." She says.
"Because he plays Quidditch?" Marlene suggests.
"Because he's funny?" I suggest.
"I haven't a clue." Remus admits.
"Because I'm hot." James informs her.

Sirius comes to you that evening.
"You okay?" You ask.
"No. My heads splitting open." He says bluntly.
"Yeah, well." You say. "Go to bed."
"No, I have to talk to you."
"About what?"
"You said you wanted to talk later."
"It can wait." You assure him.
"No, no it can't. I want to have this conversation now."
"While you're suffering." You remind him.
"Yep."
"Fine. Talk."
"Um.. I said 'conversation,' which implies two or more people talking."
"Well, you start."
"Did you mean it?"
"Mean what?"
"When you said yes."
"Yeah, I suppose so."
"Are you sure? You know me."
"Yes, and?"
"Well, I'm me."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning that you hardly know me."
"I know you better than you think."
"Do you?"
"Yes."
"Do tell."
"Your parents wanted you to be a Death Eater. You said no continuously. You have Gryffindor banners, pictures of Muggle motorcycles and women on your bedroom walls to defy your parents. Your parents abused you and you live with the Potters now. Your brother's a Death Eater and you hate it. You don't trust anyone besides James, and occasionally Remus and Peter, presumably because of your upbringing and the war. You became and animagus so Remus wouldn't have to be alone on full moons. You think you're an asshole, but you aren't, Sirius. You also think you're all tough, but in actuality, you want to be loved just as much as the next person."
".... How do you know all that?"
"Observant."
"That's scary."
"You're scared of commitment."
"Jeez, you're a freaking mind-reader."
"No, not quite." You laugh.
"Okay, so I don't know anything about you."
"I'm sure you know more than you think you do."
"Yeah, if you say so." He smiles. "So, you're sure you want to date me?"
"Yes."
"Hm. I always thought you were smarter than that." He says.
"Are you trying to dissuade me?"
"No--well. I guess I am. Damn, you're good."
You laugh. "Do you want to date me, Sirius?"
"Yes. Since second year."
You shake your head and smile.
"You said I have trust issues."
"Yes. You do."
"So you won't be offended if I... you know?"
"No, I won't be. See, you know me better than you think."
"How?"
"You know I'm willing to put up with you. It might be subconscious, but you know it."
"Moony! What does subconscious mean?" He yells behind him.
"Means your not fully aware of it." Remus answers.
"Perhaps." Sirius says casually to you.
"Go to bed." You tell him.
"Yeah, I think I will." He says, kissing your cheek.
"Oh, come on. You can do better than that." You smile.
He raises his eyebrows. "Really?"
"What?"
"You want me to kiss you?"
"Yeah?"
"Works for me." He kisses your lips, and you reciprocate. "You know, I'm not ready for bed yet." He says, sitting down beside you.
You roll your eyes. "Go to bed."
"Yes ma'am."
