Black People and mental illness

After reading thecoffeechicck chapter about her story ( which is in her fire ass rant book).

It got me thinking about my story too.

I self harmed for a really long time, because I guess I was depressed or whatever.

I attempted suicide multiple times. I obviously don't succeed because I'm writing this.

I guess you can say I'm better but some days it doesn't feel like it.

But one summer, not too long ago shit went down. My mom found out and was no help.

It was after my friend had commited suicide and it just pushed me over the edge

Well when my mother found out what I was doing she kept saying it was 'white people shit'

She told me I was trying to be something that I wasnt.

She made me tell everyone, which was embarrassing.

She made me stop listening to my music, which was a little emo, because it was white and it was helping the devil corrupt my soul. Or whatever bullshit she was talking about.

But my question is why don't black people get to experience mental illness.

Why is the poster child for teenage depression, eating disorders, self harming a white girl, whose life couldn't be more cotton candy and rainbows.

Why can't it be a little black girl, from a not so great neighbourhood,  who is the child of immigrant who was deported and she doesn't get to see.

Or the girl who works her ass off in school to get those good grades, and is bullied for being 'white' and has stress building up.

What about the girl whose mother worked three jobs, and still didn't bring home enough money to provide so the girl had to do what was necessary to provide for her family.

Well all those girls are me.

So excuse me for doing 'white people shit'. And being sad, or depressed. What ever they want to call it.

Mental illness is not exclusive to white people.

And the black community needs to realise that. It can happen to anyone, any race, any gender, any where, at any time.
