holy water
cannot help you now
a thousand armies
couldn't keep me out
i don't want your money
i don't want your crown
see i've come to burn
your kingdom down__________
"Are you worried?"
Stannis scoffed and offered his eldest daughter an unimpressed look. "I've no reason to be worried."
"You've plenty reason, Father," Amaris said, her voice suddenly angry as she curled her hands into fists. "This could all go horribly wrong and –"
"The Lord of Light is on Stannis' side," Melisandre said coolly from the corner of the room. "Surely, you must know this, Amaris."
Amaris wanted to scream. She knew R'hllor was standing in solidarity with her father, prepared to lead his chosen one to the victory. She knew all of this. Yet there was a stirring in her stomach, screaming at her, telling her that everything was wrong. A disaster would be waiting for Stannis and his men when they stormed King's Landing. Amaris was not ready for the repercussions, and she knew her father certainly was not. Still, she pressed the matter no further, knowing she certainly would not win any arguments.
So, she bowed her head towards her father, her king, and made a swift exit from the chamber. She could no longer stand to be in that coldness. Melisandre may have existed in the flames, but her fire burned like ice. Melisandre's ice was far stronger than Amaris' warmth. Amaris knew that eventually she would be forced to truly enter the Great Game and she would need to turn her warmth to the roaring heat of a dragon's breath – but for now she would settle for tending to a simple hearth.
That warmth she carried with her magnified as Shireen ran into her arms. A large grin overtook Amaris' face as she squeezed Shireen tightly, relishing in the hug from the child. She had missed her sister so very much and since she returned just over two moon cycles ago, she hadn't spent nearly enough time with the younger girl.
"How were your lessons?" Amaris asked in a soft voice that was reserved specifically for her sister.
"Oh, they were wonderful," Shireen gushed, holding a book tightly to her chest. "Maester Robyn and I read a book on the Targaryens."
Amaris grinned at the statement. The Targaryens were one of her favorite topics to research. The family's whole history was completely mad and ludicrous, yet it was all true – the dragons, the warriors, the madness, the greatness.
"Did you know," Amaris started, placing her hands on her sister's shoulders, "that each time a Targaryen is born, the gods flip a coin?"
"Do they?" Shireen asked, her eyes wide and innocent.
"Or perhaps just the one god," Amaris mused with a slight smirk. "Nonetheless, it's true. They flip a coin and see if it lands on greatness."
"What else would it land on?"
Amaris' voice was barely above a whisper as she spoke the next word in her sister's ear. "Madness."
Shireen gulped and gripped the book just a tad tighter.
"What side did the coin land on when Rheagar Targaryen was born?"
Amaris faltered. Whenever she had asked about Rheagar Targaryen as a child she had been admonished, but she kept asking. The dreams of the silver haired man with vibrant violet eyes dying in a water bank as he whispered a woman's name never left her mind. Lyanna the silver haired man whispered, his blood covered hands trembling. Amaris had always known that the silver haired man in her dreams was Rheagar Targaryen as he died at the Battle of the Trident, just after her uncle's axe struck him. Rheagar's blood fell from his body like drops of rubies.
With a sigh, Amaris spoke words she had never dared to speak before whilst her uncle had lived, "Rheagar fought valiantly. Rheagar fought nobly. Rheagar fought honorably. And Rheagar died."
"I don't understand," Shireen confessed.
"Greatness," Amaris said with a melancholy smile. "Rheagar had such greatness in him."
Shireen frowned and nodded, trying to absorb the words her sister was saying.
__________
Amaris tossed and turned in her sleep. Visions of wildfire invaded her dreams while the sounds of screaming men filled her ears. Sweat glistened off her skin and her blankets were sticking to her body. Moans of pain escaped her lips as her subconscious tried to fend off the dreams. Unfortunately, the visions were too strong. She couldn't fight off the visions.
Amaris shot up, gasping for breath as she clutched her throat and clambered away from her bed. With trembling hands, she lit a fire and collapsed into a chaise, wrapping a thick fur blanket around her shivering body.
"R'hllor," she begged quietly with a quivering voice, "allow my father to return to me. Bring him home. Please. I'm not ready to lead."
Thunder exploded overhead, shaking the earth, as lightning cracked across the sky. Amaris could not help but hope that it was R'hllor answering her prayer.
She repeated that solemn prayer until she forgot what she was praying for. She prayed for her father's return until her eyes grew too heavy to keep open. She prayed until the world went black and she was forced back into the realm of sleep.
__________
Tears streaming down her face, Amaris sprinted through the halls of the castle. Her pounding footsteps echoed throughout the stone corridor, alerting everyone of the princess' soaring emotion.
"Father!" Amaris gasped, flinging open the doors of Stannis' study.
Stannis turned to face her, looking as tall and sturdy and solemn as ever. Face breaking out into a heartbreaking grin, Amaris sprinted towards him and collapsed against his body as she hugged him tightly.
"I prayed for your return, Father," she sobbed. "I prayed until I no longer could. I was scared. I am not ready to lead, Father. I still need you to teach me."
"And teach you I shall," Stannis whispered, using one arm to hug her back while his other hand smoothed down her hair.
