The darkness that surrounded me was so familiar. I stood still in my spot as a small shiver ran up my spine. My eyebrows furrowed, a sound I hadn't heard before hitting my ears.

It was quiet at first, like a low rumble of thunder in the distance. I wanted to move. I wanted to turn away from it, but it seemed as though my entire body was frozen in place.

The rumbling grew louder, and yet through the darkness I couldn't see the lightning that was causing the noise. As the sound continued to grow, it seemed to break apart and crackle like a bonfire.

My hands shook at my sides as I stood in the dark nothingness of my mind. I closed my eyes and it was then that it seemed the lightning appeared, bright lights flashing behind my eyelids. But when I opened them again to catch a glimpse, there was nothing there.

A silent gasp escaped my parted lips as the noise sounded out one final time. It was so close and so loud that it felt like I had been shot in the head at point blank. My body lost all control and in a second I was on the ground, trying to force air into my lungs, but there was none to inhale.

My ears rung loudly and I shut my eyes, the bright flashing lights once again appearing. With nothing left inside me, I laid there in the darkness, the ringing in my ears drowning out the rumbling boom of the thunder as it faded away.
