Leaves crunched under my feet as my pace quickened. Sharp branches tore at my clothes as I trudged forward through the dark forest. As much as I hated that lake, at least I could see what was coming. Here there was nothing but darkness.
I pushed passed more branches, shielding my face as to not get scratched. My feet carried me on deeper and deeper into the forest in search of something I couldn't picture.
Moments later I halted in my place and whipped my head to the right, thinking I had just seen a flash of bright light, but there was nothing. I felt uneasy and as I took one step forward the light I now knew I had seen whizzed by me disappearing and fading into the darkness.
The warmth I felt as it passed by was so immense that I knew I needed to capture it. I knew I needed to keep it close at all costs. I quickly took off at full speed in the direction it had gone, my feet tripping over rocks and roots, but I didn't stop, I couldn't.
My heart ached to feel that warmth again if only for a second. That drive made me pick up my pace that much more, my eyes darting from left to right, the ball of light flashing for only a second in my peripheral vision.
I b-lined it to my left, my speed never faltering as I squeezed through to trees that stood a little too close together as though to stop me. The light appeared once again, circling around me before moving just the slightest bit faster like it was some sort of game.
It's light was calling me and I reached out with my hand, my lungs burning from lack of oxygen, but I only pushed myself to move faster. My arm strained as I took one last step and catapulted myself off the ground in a last chance effort, catching the light in my hands as I reached up into the air above my head.
I pulled the glowing light into my chest, holding onto it tightly. A feeling of being home washed over me and a smile graced my lips. The light burned brighter, expanding outward to envelope me in a blinding flare that warmed me like the sun's rays.
And I let that warmth take hold of me without a second thought.
