Connie P.O.V
I jog back to camp and arrive ahead of Joel. As soon as I walk in, everyone looks in my direction with happiness and curiosity.
"Hey Connie." Wayne says as I walk over to the camp fire and sit down with the rest of the boys.
"Hey boys, sorry I stink." I say.
"It's ok, um where's Joel?" Adam asks me. I turn around to look at the pathway I've just followed, and after a few seconds, an out of breath Joel appears.
"You, are insanely fast." He pants as he comes over and sits next to me, resting his head on my shoulder. "Guys, we got 5 stars!" He tells the boys joyfully as they all stand and make their way over to us, giving us a hug as they sit back down and we explain what we had to do.
I feel Joel wrap his arm around me, and when I look up at him, he moves his lips towards mine.
"I told you babe, your not getting a kiss until you shower. You stink." I say.
I look over to see the boys laughing. " I love how you say it as it is Con." Wayne laughs.
"So do you." Joel moans at me as he walks off towards the shower.
Later on...
After everyone's showered, Larry and Martin come back from their dingo dollar challenge with some scones. There was a whole incident about how you cut a scone, but we enjoyed them nonetheless with the 5 meals of kangaroo that we are given and with vegetables we've never heard of. The camp president thing is over now, and anyone can do any chore. Anyone can also sit in the throne, so being the last girl, I always have an excuse to sit in the comfy seat.
"Larry, I never thought that you could make kangaroo taste so good!" Martin complements. It must taste pretty good to him, as Martin is the last person to compliment Larry on anything!
"Thanks Martin." He says. I adjust myself in the chair and then finish my meal, before putting my dish in the pile of things to be washed, and head to the telegraph to see if there is a laminate waiting for us.
I open the door to the wooden cabin and there's a laminate, so I skim over it whilst I'm walking back to camp, and read it out loud to the boys.
"Guys," I call as I walk in and sit back in my chair.
"Celebrities. Tonight, you have the chance to win letters from home by answering questions about one another. Around the camp, are 7 locked boxes. On the first box is a question. You must come up with the correct answer to the question and then find it amongst words and numbers contained in a bag next to each box. When you find the answer, it will reveal a code that will unlock a different box with the next question. For each box you open, you will receive a letter from home. Good luck." I read out.
As soon as I see the look of nervousness on the boys faces, I know that we have to do this.
We all find separate boxes around the camp. I position myself up in the allotment, and all the boys find one as well.
"Who has the first question?" Jordan shouts.
"Me." I hear Joel shout from down by the shower. As soon as the clackson rings, he reads out the first question.
"How many medals did the GB swimming team win in Rio this year?" Joel shouts.
Oh god. I try and count up the number in my head. I think of Jazz and Adam, and the rest of the team who brought a medal home.
"I think it's 9." I shout, as the number 9 echos from voice to voice across the camp. I search through the keys and don't have it, which means someone else does.
"I got it." Larry shouts with the code.
"6, 8, 6, 1, 3" is the code that everyone shouts. I try it but it doesn't work.
"Mines open!" Jordan shouts from by the phone box.
"What was the name of the Saturdays debut single in 2008?" He shouts. I repeat the question and shout it down to Wayne beside the dungy.
"Oh I don't know!" He says. "Try 'if this is love'." He shouts. I look for them in my bag and find the words, reading the code imprinted on the back.
"Ok, the code is, 8,9,7,6,4." I say and repeat it again.
"It's not working." I hear Martin shout as do the other boys. I try it on my box as I realise I'm the only one who hasn't tried it, and the box opens.
"Sorry guys, mines open." I shout.
"How many boys in diversity?" I shout towards the creek where Jordan is.
Later on...
The clackson rings as soon as we have all the boxes open. We've done it! We all have our letters from home. We have contact with the outside world.
I sit around the campfire with everyone but Joel.
"I'm so happy we've got these. Well done everyone." Martin says as we all agree and praise each other.
Joel comes and sits in the throne and holds a wicker basket full of rolled up messages.
"We need to read out other people's messages." He says as he passes them around randomly. I look at the tag on mine. I have Martin's letter. I open it up, and Adam starts off by reading the one in his hand.
"This is Joel's letter from his mom. Dear Joel. I know that you have made some great friends in your fellow camp mates, one even more than that," Adam reads. Joel takes my hand and interlocks his fingers into mine, looking over at me as Adam reads his letter. ", and they will have been so lucky to have got to know you. I know that I'm so lucky to be your mum. You've grown into a man that I'm so proud to say is my son. Love you more than rainbows. Mum xx"
I look up at Joel, and wipe the tear from his cheek. He smiles down at me, and squeezes my hand tighter as I take my hand away to unwrap my letter.
"This is Martin's letter from his wife Kirsty. Darling Martin. We've been watching every minute of your time in the jungle, and I want you to know how incredibly proud we are of you. We can't wait to see you and give you the worlds biggest hug, and for our amazing family to become one again. All my love, Kirsty." I read. I look over to see Martin in tears, wiping them from his eyes slowly.
"Ok," Joel says as he unwraps his letter, squeezes my hand and smiles down at me. "This is Connie's letter from her sister Kayla." Joel says. I feel my whole body tingle at the name of my older sister. A smile widens on my face as Joel starts to read it.
"Dear my little sister Connie. I can't believe how well your doing. I just want to say how proud the whole family are of you. Family, friends and the whole swimming team get together every night to see you on the TV. It's amazing to see how well you get along with your fellow camp mates, and I'm sure you love them all to pieces, especially Joel. You've got yourself a good one there sis! I'm so proud of my little sister. I can't wait to see you at the end of the bridge. Hopefully I'll see you with the crown on your head, but whatever happens, you will always be our queen of the jungle. Keep doing what your doing, stay strong, we love you millions. Your sister, your best-friend, Kayla." He finishes. I feel the tears roll down my face and I wipe them from my eyes. Joel turns and hugs me tight. That little contact with the loved ones you miss so much just means the world.
After I've stopped crying, the next letters are read. After all of them, we pretty much all end up in tears and a massive group hug. We take our own letters, and just sit in silence, reading them to ourselves. Every time I see her handwriting it makes me cry and smile. All I've wanted to do is make my family proud. And when you know that your doing that, it makes everything worth while.
We all end up going to bed pretty late. I'm so tired as we head up, Joel piggybacks me up to my hammock.
"Goodnight baby." He tells me as he pecks my cheek. "Your family seem so sweet and proud of you." He tells me.
"Your mum sounds incredible." I tell him. He leans back down and takes my hand, kissing the top of it goodnight.
"Sleep well Connie." He tells me as he rests himself in his own hammock, and we both gently fall asleep.
