How I Fell In Love

I did not have a choice in loving you.
You are the air rising from wherever it comes, and I have no choice but to breathe it in.
It is either that or die.
Loving you was not a choice
it was the reaction of not breathing for years and then finally finding a source of air.
Even before I knew love was there
I found comfort in the way
you always knew what I was thinking,
always heard what my words were saying.
Do you know how rare you are?
Amid a sea of people that move en mass toward some unreachable thing,
you turned and saw me and stopped.
Stopped cold and started toward me.
Determined that I was not
to be left behind and alone,
but that no matter what we were moving towards it would be
inestimably easier to do it together.
You didn't know that I was behind everyone because I was watching them,
searching their blank faces for a friend.
You didn't know how long I waited,
but if I had to do it again,
I would have waited my lifetime.
You were worth the patience.
