^RYLAN^

"WHY DIDN'T YOU tell me you invited her?" I whispered to Gemma as we walked slower than Ruby intentionally. We had finally gotten off the plane but we were all completely exhausted. Even Ruby was, and I saw her sneak in a short nap on the plane.

This was the first time I had the chance to speak to Gemma without Ruby hearing me. I was mad at Gemma beyond belief. This trip was originally supposed to be about me going home for the weekend before Gemma had invited herself to come. I was fine with that, in fact, I was excited. But now that Ruby was also coming, I felt like I couldn't do what I wanted to do anymore.

"I felt bad leaving her behind. Besides, when I asked her to come I didn't expect her to actually agree. She said she had 'work' to do here anyway." Gemma said quietly.

I frowned. "Work?" I asked, confused. What on Earth could she be working on here? Unless she was taking up more bartending or something.

"Don't worry, I'm here for myself, not for you. You'll barely even see me." Ruby said from ahead of us, and I have no clue how she managed to hear a word. Or maybe she just assumed.

I felt confident in myself to question her, seeing as she already knew more about me than others, plus she was there to experience my horrifying night out.

"And what 'job' are you doing exactly, Ruby?" I asked as soon as I caught up to her.

Ruby turned her head towards me, staring at me through her black sunglasses as the corner of her plump lips tug upwards ever so slightly.

"Selling drugs." She said casually and I heard Gemma spit out her coffee.

I came to a halt, letting Gemma catch up to me as she wiped her stained chin.

"She's joking." I told her, not phased by her response at all. "I mean, who would admit to someone that they're a drug dealer?" I almost laughed.

"Ruby." Gemma said and I narrowed my eyes at her.

"What? She's really here to sell drugs?" I questioned.

"No, well, I don't know. She just sounded so serious-"

"Well she's not." I said. I did not know why I was in denial as Ruby was not an important asset to my life, but it was most likely because I hated drugs and the topic of them as I knew they ruined lives. My father was on them the day he crashed the car, killing himself and my sober mother.

"I'm sorry." Gemma held my shoulder as she remembered how much the topic of them affected me.

"It's fine. It happened. Nothing we can do about it now." I replied, letting her hold onto me as we kept walking towards the exit.

The past was the least of my worries, because all I could think about right now was taking a pregnancy test or going to the doctors as soon as I was able to, so that I could get tested for any disease. I doubted that Ethan had any disease as he seemed extremely healthy, but you never knew.

I noticed Ruby giving me strange looks throughout our journey to a restaurant for lunch, as if she knew I was still worrying about it. Gemma, however, was completely oblivious to my problems and was instead distracted by the city.

"We need to go to Fifth Avenue after this. I've heard all about it." Gemma said excitedly, shaking the menu that was given to us by a waiter.

I couldn't help but give her judging looks. Even Ruby seemed amused by her behaviour, raising an eyebrow at her and then looking at me.

"I forgot you've never been here before." I grinned as I read the menu. Gemma and I had met up plenty of times, but never in New York. I realized how incredible this place may seem for someone who hasn't lived here. If I wasn't born and bred here then I'd be struck with awe as well.
