The Past
The sky was completely dark as I parked the car in the lott, behind the garbage dumpster. Usually around this time it was harder to make out who came around, but it was noticeable to him at least. I didn't want to give anyone with the naked eye to see my car being here, it was bad enough that I decided to show up. God knows what those people would think, my reputation was important in the streets. At least from what I had known, everyone in the main parts of town respected my work.
It was the other side I was afraid of, wanting to know if this was going to put a damper in my career. It was important to me. However, I found that it was best to just get my name out there for one thing. And Brooks made sure that would happen, respectfully as I deserved. We helped each other when it was needed, I called him about things with my family. He called whenever he had a little situation that got out of control, and needed medical attention.
That was our plan and it was the only reason I was willing to get out of bed at three am, for a while at least. I grabbed my lab coat with my briefcase, opening the door and stepping out into the cool night air. Usually I would feel bothered coming out by myself, without protection. But if anything, I was safe in this neighborhood.
I cleared my throat while closing the door shut, walking down the pitch black path. Only the sound of my heels moving against the concrete, echoing the Lott. I ignored the glances from workers, standing around taking duty to guard the place. It was their job, and they knew me by now.
One of them followed me towards the back entrance, taking one hand off the machine gun and opening the door for me. I gave a bright smile and nod, keeping the fast pace up the staircase. Brooks was a very cautious person, he didn't take risks when it comes to certain things. Even if his location was obvious, you wouldn't be able to see him. A complete fly on the wall, that's what I describe him as....
In high school he was no better than now, people used to make jokes about him. Saying that he would end up in jail one day, or worst - six feet under. I dreaded for that time to come, although our paths ended up going into two separate ways. We cared for each other deeply, otherwise I wouldn't be here right now.
Another guard met me on top of the staircase, being an escort to guide me into the elevator safely. He pressed the button, remaining quiet as we rode up together. I took notice of his curious glances, his green eyes peeking at me with a hint of humor. By the way he looked, I could tell right off the bat it was new recruit.
Brooks rarely took in new people, unless it was absolutely necessary. I could tell this wasn't an easy choice, but he had no other answers. The guy seemed frigid just being alone with me, he wasn't even ready to be an escort. Yet, I pitied him anyways - this wasn't a high choice for everyone. Some people did it because they had to do it, others just did it to be known. As if that was going to do anything for them, poor thing had no idea what this was going to be for him.
