Later on That Evening

You never know how much of an importance you are to people until you turn your phone back on from being off and find voice mail messages out the ass.

BEEP- Beyoncé, this is your mother. You know ..the woman that birthed you, cleaned your snotty nose and diapers, looked after you until you thought you were too grown to keep in touch? It'd be nice if you'd call once in a while to let me know you're still breathing child. Don't make me have to come looking for you! Call me back!

Sitting in still traffic and on my home from work, I rolled my eyes at my mother's severely exaggerated message and deleted it in no time. I had just talked to her ass no more than a week ago. She seriously needed a new hobby or something. Maybe she was around that age where parents start feeling useless.

Camille was a grown ass woman and wife to say the least, and Solange just never gave two shits about family time in the first place so I guess I can understand why she felt the need to bug me half the time now. I'm a little iffy about calling her back though.

Next message...

Bee.... Marcus. Been trynna get in touch with you all day. Guess you too busy for a nigga now huh? Understood. On some real shit, I'm trying to see you. Let me know wassup...

God, his persistency was wearing me out. How many excuses could I come up with to ditch this 100th attempt of him trying to take me out?

Next...

B-tch, why the hell is your phone off? You aint really doin no work. Probably on the computer lookin at Myspace. ANYWAY- Call me, I don't know if I'll be able to make it anymore to Ty's thing tonight.

I didn't even feel like going my damn self; a little part of me just really, really wanted to see Jay.

Bypassing all the messages and choosing to respond at a later time, I tossed my phone in the passenger's seat and continued on my way home. By the time I got there it was 7. I didn't make it past the sofa before I dozed off flipping through the mail and watching the news. Waking up at 5 every morning was no joke.

Around 9:00 my phone started ringing jarring me out of the comfortable position I'd found myself asleep in on the sofa.

"Did you get my message?" Kelly asked disregarding the traditional greeting.

"Yea." With tired eyes, I got up and headed towards my bedroom while she went on to explain how Lorenzo wasn't coming through on his fatherly duties this particular Friday evening. Apparently they were supposed to meet up somewhere today and he was a no show. I listened to her rant and rave for a good 15 minutes about her and her 'baby daddy' issues. Between you and I was barely paying attention. It was always the same old same old with them.

I could hear RJ in the background still asking about his father's whereabouts.

"Your Daddy is an asshole, okay? Remember that!" she told him.

"Kelly!" I frowned in the midst of looking through my closet.

"What?" she laughed and I shook my head.

"Stop talking like that around him. You gon be mad when he go somewhere repeating it."

"I wouldn't give a rat's ass. It's the truth."

I sighed giving it a rest. It's her life, right?

Merging into my bathroom, I turned on the shower and finally asked. "So you comin tonight or what? I can always count on your ass to stand me up."

"Oh whatever. It's not my fault you don't like going places by yourself." She tsked. "I was calling again to tell you that my Mom said she'll be here, I'll just have to put RJ to bed before I leave out."
