"Alex?" the barista calls out.

FBI agent Alex Blake walks over to grab the cup. But instead, her hand collides with someone else's hand.

"Oh, um. Sorry. Th- that's probably yours," he says.

"Are you sure? What was your order?"

"Small black coffee."

"Really?" Blake responds with a tone of mild skepticism. "So was mine."

"Wow, um, what a coincidence?" Alex laughs nervously.

"You can have that one then. I'll just wait." Blake turned around and walked to the edge of the room.

"I- I could wait with you," Alex suggested.

Blake nodded, watching him carefully.

"So... Do you come here often?"

"Not usually, no. There's coffee at my office."

"Oh. So why'd you come here today?"

"Because there's only so much crappy coffee a woman can take," Blake laughs. Alex joins in the laughter, all the while having never taken a sip of his coffee.

"Why aren't you drinking?" Blake inquires. "Waiting for it to cool down?"

Not having a response prepared, Alex shrugs and sips the coffee.

The two wait for a few minutes before Blake marches up to the front counter and inquires about her coffee.

"I'm sorry ma'am. Do you have your receipt?" the boy at the register asks.

"Yes right here." Blake hands the receipt to the clerk, who looks at it and walks into the back only to emerge a minute later with a confused expression. "I- I'm sorry ma'am," he begins. "But this order already went out. Is it possible someone else took your drink?"

Blake looks over her shoulder at Alex, who waves tentatively. "Yes, I suppose. Thank you anyway," Blake says as she turns to go back to Alex.

"Here," he says, handing Blake a five dollar note.

"What's this for?" she asks.

"The coffee," he responds. "I have a confession."

"Let me guess. Your name isn't really Alex. You just wanted an excuse to talk to me that felt less forced and creepy than approaching me and complementing, say, my hair."

"Y- yeah," he admits. "The barista tip you off?"

"No, but your little wince after your first and only sip of my coffee did. It's also highly unlikely that two people with the same name have the same order on the same day at relatively the same time. It all seemed too coincidental." Blake smirks at the man, who is avoiding eye contact and blushing profusely.

"Wh- well I... um. You a skeptical person?"

"Not really. It just that my job and love of knowledge forces me to look at situations in an analytic manner."

"You said you were a pencil pusher."

"No, I said my office has awful coffee, which is true. You just assumed that I have a boring desk job."

There is a brief pause before the man continues.

"So what do you do?"

"I work for the FBI. I'm a profiler," Blake responds, nonchalantly turning to exit the coffee shop. The man follows her.

"If you want," Blake continues without turning around, "this is my card." Blake holds out a business card for the man to take. "Next time, don't use such a cliché to talk to me, Brian."

"H- how did you-"

"You perked up a bit when they called out Brian." With that Blake walks off, leaving Brian standing in awe.
