"Babe, it's two in the morning."
"And?" Spencer replied.
"Aaaaaaaaand... I need to sleep!"
"I'm just doing my job," he insisted innocently.
You cocked your head inquisitively. "What do you mean?"
"I'm keeping you occupied and happy so you don't get nightmares."
You laughed. "Well thank you, baby."
"Anytime, y/n/n."
You sat holding your phone to your ear, listening to the shared silence. "You hang up," you teased.
"No, you hang up!" Spencer joked back.
"Same time?"
"As you wish," he whispered happily.
"Okay. One..."
"Two..."
"WAIT!"
"Yes?" Spencer asked with baited breath.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"Happy two years."
Spencer chuckled lovingly. "Happy two years."
You took a moment to smile.
"Three!" you said in unison.
The next morning you were awakened by a knock. Groggily, you rolled out of bed and shuffled to the door.
. . .
"Hey, it's y/n! Leave your name and number. Thanks!"
"Hey, y/n/n. Uh, this is the third time I've called. Is- is everything alright? If you're mad at me I'm sorry but I don't know why. Please contact me in some way. At least let me know you're alright. Okay. Bye." Spencer hung up and sighed defeatedly.
"What's wrong, Spence?"
"Nothing, JJ," he fibbed.
"Uh huh, right." JJ put her stack of files down and stared at Spencer. "I may not be a profiler, but I am a woman."
Spencer groaned internally. "Women are naturally better at distinguishing facial features and emotions than men. Historically it made them better communicators and caretakers because they could-"
"Spence, you're stalling."
"A- am I?" Spencer chuckled nervously.
"Tell me what's wrong."
"I'd really rather not, JJ. It's kind of personal."
JJ nodded. "Okay. That's all you needed to say. We have a meeting in five."
Spencer thanked JJ and finished up a case report before heading to the boardroom.
"Hello, crimefighters. Okay, so we have a string of kidnappings. There have been four so far and the bodies of the first two victims have shown up. Karen Meltsner and Gina Bowler. Both were killed, dumped, and found five days after being taken."
Spencer's fists tightened when the women's pictures appeared on the screen.
"The other two victims are Mallory Trinsy and y/n y/l/n."
