Avery came downstairs in a hurry.

"Whoa, slow down there, kiddo! What's the rush?"

Avery smiled and rolled their eyes. "I'm gonna be late for school, and I'm not a kid anymore."

Jason chuckled. "No, you're not, which is why you're not going to school today."

Avery looked at Jason quizzically. "What? You're letting me skip school?"

Jason nodded. "I already called you in. Now, let's have some breakfast, shall we?"

Avery put their bag down and sat curiously at the table. "You don't let me skip school for nonessentials. What's going on?"

"Nothing," he replied with an all too giddy smile.

Before Avery could continue their interrogation, Jason carried out a plate of pancakes.

"Blueberry, your favorite," Jason chirped.

Avery shrugged and began eating.

"I have a present for you," Jason prompted.

"You really didn't have to-"

"Yes I did. Here." Jason handed Avery a large green gift bag. "Read the card on the outside first."

Avery pulled the folded note off and read it. Once they finished they dropped the note and covered their mouth. "Did you really?" they asked with excitement.

Jason smiled. "I did."

Avery got up and hugged Jason tightly, getting tears on his shirt.

"Well, it's not official yet. You still need to sign the documents saying you approve of the name change."

Avery didn't let go. "This is the best present ever," they whispered. "Thank you, Dad. I love you so much. Thank you for everything."

Jason hugged Avery back tighter.
