For the purpose of this fic let's pretend Reid wants to use his psychology degree in a non-BAU context. Cool? Cool. | Requested by GirlGamer610
You were seated across your new therapist. You disliked therapy already, but getting stuck with the new guy? You were more than unhappy.
"Alright, shall we get started?" the man asked.
You shrugged.
"Alright. My name is Dr. Spencer Reid."
You looked up at him wearing an expression of shock and confusion.
"What's wrong?"
You shook your head.
"Please tell me. Do I make you uncomfortable."
You shook your head slightly. "You're not a therapist," you mumbled, still refusing eye contact. "You work for the BAU."
Dr. Reid nodded. "Well, yes, but I have a degree in psychology and I thought I could put it to use."
You nodded slowly.
"You're still uncomfortable with me."
"Well, I don't like therapists."
"No, it's more than that. You're uncomfortable with me being your therapist, aren't you."
You nodded.
"Is it because I have less experience?"
You didn't respond.
"Well, I- I assure you, y/n, everyone had to start somewhere." Seeing you were unconvinced, he continued. "What's something you're good at?"
"What?" you asked incredulously.
"Tell me something you excel at. Singing? Dancing? Reading, writing, knowing what people are thinking... anything."
"Uh, I'm pretty good at pool."
"Were you always good?"
"Pretty much," you said with a shrug.
"Well- well uh, what- what's something you needed to practice to be good at?"
You rolled your eyes. "I know you're just planning on saying that I had to start somewhere so you do too. I don't need the lecture."
"Actually, I was gonna ask if who ever taught you was patient with you."
Feeling awkward, you shifted in your seat.
"All I ask is for you to give me a chance, okay?"
"Okay," you conceded quietly.
"Thank you. So what brings you here?"
"I have to be," you respond curtly.
"You don't seem thrilled about that."
You looked up and made eye contact for the first time. You were about to shoot a sarcastic remark his way when you were distracted by his beautiful, penny eyes.
"You okay?"
"Hmm? Oh, yeah. I just... I don't like talking to other people about... you know..."
"I get it," he replied. You felt an honest sincerity in his voice. "But it does help. I promise."
You continued the session, opening up more than you expected yourself to. So much so that you willingly scheduled your own follow-up appointment.
"So, see you next week?" Dr. Reid asked hopefully.
"Yes. Thank you, Dr. Reid."
He smiled. "You can call me Spencer."
You blushed. "I- I-"
"I mean or Dr. Reid! Dr. Reid is fine... I just- uh- uh you don't need to be so formal..."
"Is calling you by your first name, I don't know, un- unprofessional?"
"Maybe. But, I don't mind."
You smiled and turned to leave, calling "See you next week, Spencer," over your shoulder.
