Spencer was on the train home from work when he felt his phone buzzing. Rolling his eyes and praying it wasn't another emergency case, he reached for his phone.
"Dr. Spencer Reid," he answered less enthusiastically than usual.
"Hi, Spencer!"
Spencer widened his eyes. "Y/n! Hi!"
"Hey. Any chance you can help me out?"
"Uh, sure. What do you need?"
"Can you help me study for my exam? It's in 38 hours and I'm freaking out here."
Spencer laughed. "Yeah! Of course, I'll help you! I'll just head home first and shower."
"Great! Thank you so much!"
As Spencer hung up a smile spread across his face. This was the closest he'd ever gotten to having a date with you.
Spencer Reid was your next-door neighbor growing up and in the same college graduating class as your sister. The two of you had kept in touch over the years, mostly talking about each other's families. But both of you separately hoped that this friendship would turn into more.
An hour later Spencer was standing out front of your apartment complex.
"Hello?" you said into the receiver.
"Y/n! Hi! It's Spencer. Can you buzz me in?"
"Oh, yeah! I'll unlock the door."
You hung up and held the star button on your landline for a few moments before running to unlock the front door.
"That was fast," you remarked as Spencer walked in.
Spencer shrugged. "So, what exactly am I helping you with?"
"Computer science."
The blood drained from Spencer's face. His one chance to impress you and he was going to blow it.
"What's wrong?"
"I, uh..." Spencer scratched the back of his head nervously. "Nothing, nothing. What- what, uh, what seems to be the issue?"
"So I have my exam tomorrow," you said, promptly sitting down on the floor in front of the coffee table, "and the part that would be an essay is this final code but I can't get it to work! So, what do you know about Assembly?"
Spencer blinked a few times before he said, nearly yelled, "I have to use the bathroom," and bolted out of the room.
Now hidden in the bathtub, Spencer whipped out his phone.
"Heeeeeeeeeeello you've reached the goddess of infinite knowledge! How can I help you, boy wonder?"
"Garcia! I need your help with programming."
"Oh, pfft I got you. Whaddaya need?"
"What do you know about 'Assembly'?"
"Assembly? Dear god why is that the language you're starting with? You should probably start with something like Python or—"
"No, no, Garcia it's not for me. It's for a friend. I'm supposed to help but I don't know anything about computers!"
"Okay, okay! Just put your friend on the phone."
"No!"
The line was silent for a few moments.
"Garcia?"
"Reid. Is this friend of yours... cute?"
Spencer groaned.
"I'll take that as a yes. Fine, Dr. Reid, I will help you in your quest for love—"
