Chapter 24

"Oh hey, boy with your hat back, I kinda like that
If you wanna walk my way
Ima shoot ya straight up
Show me what your made of" - Love me like you mean it - Kelsea Ballerini

"Have you thought about signing up for softball yet?" My best friend Vanessa asked me as we left our English class.

I sighed, "No, I haven't made up my mind up yet."

"What?" She practically yelled, and halted in her steps. Why does she have to be so dramatic?

"Come on Becks, you used to be such a good player. I don't understand why you won't at least try out for your senior year."

"I know, it's just I'm nervous. I haven't played in almost four years. What if I lost all my talent and I'm terrible?"

She rolled her eyes as we kept walking to our lockers. "I can almost promise you that you didn't lose all your talent. You were freaking good until you got that stupid leg injury."

It's true that I used to play softball. I've always loved the sport and have played since I was seven. The end of my eighth grade season, I was running to home plate from third base to score, when the catcher and pitcher pummeled into me trying to get me out. The collision resulted in me tearing my ACL and having emergency surgery to fix it. It had healed and I was cleared to play the next year, but i was too traumatized to not want to play anymore.

Softball was mine and Vanessa's thing. We always had a blast playing together; I was the first base to her pitcher, we were unstoppable. That is, until I was injured and stopped playing. Vanessa really wants me to play this year with her since it is our senior year.

"I don't care what you say, I'm signing you up and you are trying out." She grabbed my arm and I followed after her to the sign up board. I watched as she signed my name on the sheet. It really would be great to be back on the softball field. It has been so long, I'm just nervous I've lost my touch.

"What if I don't make the team? Or what if I get hurt again?" I said, voicing out my only fears of trying out.

"You are going to make the team and you will not get hurt. I will make sure neither will happen." She promises.

"Hello ladies," Kyle says, coming up behind us and throwing his arms around Vanessa and I. "What are you two doing over here?"

"I'm trying to get Becca to agree to try out for softball." Vanessa blabs and i shoot daggers at her. Now Kyle is not going to shut up about it either. "She's a beast and deserves to be out there one last time."

He eyes widen and he looked at me , "You play?"

"I used to,"

"Why don't you anymore?"

So I went into the long story about how I used to play until I had torn my ACL. Vanessa would add in her comments as I tried to remember the accident.

"Oh my God, I remember watching that game. I can't believe that was you."

I nodded, "Yep, unfortunately that was me."

"You were crazy good." He told me. "You have to give it another shot."

"See, that's what I've been trying to tell her." Vanessa said, getting all dramatic again. I swear, that girl needs a chill pill.

"I really appreciate you're comments, I really do. But you guys have to understand that I have not swung a bat or caught a softball in four years. That's a long time and I don't think I will be ready and good enough to try out." I was trying to explain to them my side of the story. I would love to get back out there and play, but I really just don't know if I can do it.
