Chapter 2

"Why you gotta tell me that I'm looking good
Don't know what
You were thinkin'
You were doing
Moving in for a hug
Like you don't know I'm coming unglued
Why you gotta
Why you wanna
Make me keep wanting you" - Why ya wanna - Jana Kramer

I glanced quickly at the digital clock on my desk in my room.

4:45 p.m.

I was running late. I needed to be at work in 15 minutes or else I would be counted late which wouldn't be good. I work at a little Starbucks stand that is placed in a bookstore in the mall. Only two people work each shift and whoever my coworker will be for today is going to kill me if I'm late since we always seem to be busy.

"Thanks so much Austin for watching the Reese and Cate. My mom didn't realize that I had to work when she made plans for me to watch them. She should be done with her meeting in an hour." I said as I rushed down the stairs in the kitchen where Austin was helping my younger siblings with their homework.

He looked up from my sister's homework sheet, "It's no problem, you know I love hanging out with them."

"Be good kiddos," I said to my siblings.

"They will," Austin answered for them. "What time will you be off?"

"I think 7:00. I'm just working a two hour shift tonight."

"I'll be here then. I'll text Dauton and we can have a Mario Kart battle." He said with a mischievous smile. Of course he wants to have a Mario Kart battle, he wins every time.

"Get ready to get your a-I mean butt kicked." I said chuckling at the look that Austin was currently giving me because I almost cursed in front of my little brother and sister.

"Bye!" He sang while jokingly shoving me out the door.

I quickly got in my car and drove off to my job. I really was pushing it to be their on time. I wish I knew who my co worker would be for today so I could call them and apologize a million times for cutting it close. But unfortunately I didn't know. Normally I would try and work with Vanessa but since it is Volleyball season, she isn't working as much.

Fifteen minutes later, I pulled into the mall parking lot and rushed inside the bookstore to the small Starbucks stand in the corner of the store.

I was relieved to see Carrie, a sweet college student whom I have worked with before, standing at the counter taking orders and making coffee.

"You're late," she tsked but didn't seem mad.

I was in fact late. Only about five minutes but late nonetheless.

"I'm so sorry!" I said as I began to make the coffees so she could finish taking orders. "My mom forgot I had to work today and she had a meeting so I had to find someone to keep my siblings."

"It's okay, I'll let it slide this time." She said but with a hint of laughter. She's a nice girl and I don't work with her much but when I do, we always get along well.

The little cafe area in the bookstore was small but cute. We have a stand where we take orders and things displays like scones, pastries and coffee drinks in bottles already made. Then behind the counter we have our station where we make the coffee drinks. It's a small space which is why only two people work a shift. In front of our stand there is a lounge area where people can sit at table and chairs while reading their book and drinking their coffee. We are usually pretty busy which at times can get a little chaotic but it also helps the time go by fast.
