Chapter 27
"Beauty queen of only eighteen
She had some trouble with herself
He was always there to help her
She always belonged to someone else" - She will be loved - Maroon 5I finished tying the strings on my softball cleats and stood up. I was getting ready for my softball game against our biggest rival. We are the home team and this game determines if we go to regionals or not. So, today's game was huge. I am a little nervous, but I don't think it is because of the game. It is because who is coming to the game.
Kyle hasn't been able to come watch me play because he has baseball. But his team isn't playing today, so he is finally getting to come watch me play. I want to prove to him that his hardwork training me to get back to my talent worked.
I want to make him proud.
Austin is also coming to the game. He comes to all my games though, so him coming doesn't make me nervous. I have always been thankful for his support.
"Alright ladies! Hit the field. It's game time!" My softball coach yelled to my teammates and I. I grabbed my glove from the bench and ran out to my position on first base. My best friend Vanessa gets to her spot at pitchers mound and started warming up. Me, the second baseman, shortstop, and third baseman took turns throwing grounders to each other while we warmed up.
I glanced over to the side where my cheer section was sitting and I got a glimpse of Kyle sitting in the bleachers. He winked when we made eye contact and shot me a thumbs up. I grinned back at him in response and then went back to warming up. I was going to try my best to not get all flustered because he was here watching. I really don't want to make any errors.
The umpire signaled that it was time to start the inning and I got in my position. I shook out my arms and legs to try and get the nerves out, but my stomach was filled with butterflies.
Damn Kyle and his stupid good looks.
The first inning flew by quickly. I made an out at first base and the other two outs were made in the outfield. That made three outs and it was time for us to come in and bat. I fall in the middle pack of the batting line up, so I sit down on the bench in the dug out to catch my breath. Vanessa comes up beside me, pulling her helmet on.
"Hey, you good?" She asked me.
I flash her a smile. "Yeah, we got this."
She grabs her bat and makes her way out of the dugout to start practicing her swings. She is such a great softball player, I wouldn't be surprised if she got a scholarship somewhere to play. She deserves it.
Vanessa was up to bat and she hit it to the outfield and making a double. The next batters hit around and we were up 3-1 at the end of the first inning. I took my position at first base, and when I looked in the crowd I was shocked at what I saw.
Matt was standing in the crowd. He was by him self, no friend or girl with him but he was there nonetheless. I didn't even tell him I had a game today, he just showed up. He was looking else where, but it was almost like he knew my gaze was on him and he turned to look at me. I quickly looked away and tried to avoid his eyes watching me. My stomach was turning flips and it was making me way more nervous than I already was
I wasn't sure how I was feeling about him being here. Sure, it made me happy to know he was here supporting me. But he wasn't exactly my favorite person right now. After running into him and that Kaylee girl at the yogurt place, I wasn't really sure where we stood with each other.
It was all so confusing and it's making my head spin.
As much as I wanted to ponder and think about why Matt is here, I had to keep my head in the game and push all that to the side right now. My focus had to be on winning this game even though my mind wanted it to be somewhere else.
