Chapter 3 | look my way, Look away
"It's so lovely to see you up and about Cloud, yes my son had been entirely worried," Saanti sighed taking a sip of his tea. I smiled knowing that Saanti was feeling better. He seemed to feeling good enough to be crouched in a chair sipping his usual unusual tea with a glass and gold chess board in front of him.
"I figured it was long enough to mourn a person who would be fine," I replied with a giggle, I had acted foolish. Saanti watched me carefully but didn't comment. He took another sip of hit tea, steam rose from the cup and I wondered if he ever worried about burning his tongue.
"Unfortunately, we haven't heard anything from Lucifer yet, the council hasn't sent us any word yet either," he pouted setting the cup down to play with the glass pawn piece. My eyes widened, if the council was involved as well then this had to be huge, not just a private matter anymore. Although Valor, Lucifer, Elizabeth and Elliot were on the council Elizabeth had told me the system was huge with many parts to it. It was much bigger than the game of life with demons, it was the very system Hell was made and organized by.
"The councils involved?" Valor let out a lazy yawn causing Saanti to glance over at him with a heated look.
"Were you not in change of looking after Cloud? This is why I agreed to stay behind," he sighed placing the piece on the board to move a gold piece. Valor chuckled at Saanti like an old friend telling a harmless joke and I looked away nervously. I didn't understand why no one was fond of Valor, sure he tried to kill me –many times– but didn't he deserve a second chance?
"Where were you?" I asked looking over at Valor. He shrugged his shoulders, a slight pink blush formed over his face and my eyes widened in horror. Did Valor the terrifying demon just blush? The thought haunted my dreams, I prayed he was coming down with a demon sickness.
"And when do you return to your own home?" Saanti questioned swiping two pieces off the table. I watched the glass fall, points of the delicate detail chipped off the pawn and the knight snapped in half. Despite these damages, Saanti seemed unbothered.
"Soon, tomorrow maybe. I'd like to be gone by the time the council orders a meeting, then I could direct the meeting my way and in my lady's favour of course. The demonic system is not fond of angel blood but they do act unbiased most of the time," Valor explained to me and I nodded. It made sense and I knew he'd leave eventually to his own life. But my heart still hurt at that, not having him around was like a friend leaving. I'd miss him.
"Yes, good," Saanti spoke distractedly as he played his chess game then turned to look at me, "care for a game Cloud?" Laughing nervously I looked at Lithan for help. His eyes locked on me then he pretended to not notice and continued to read his book. I glanced up at Valor who snickered.
"You're on your own," he retorted leaving the room. I cursed any god that was listening then looked at Saanti who grinned so widely, I could see every sharp teeth he owned. Damn him, he knew he won and wore that with pride. I moved to sit directly in front of him, letting myself sink into the warm armchair. Saanti set up the board but left the two glass pieces broken on the floor. I stared at them with question.
"You don't need to worry about those, I don't need them," he chuckled. I rolled my eyes.
"That's a bold move, disregarding your people after their use?" I teased the old king and he laughed loudly, and I joined in silently clapping myself on the back for the good joke. Then his laugh cut off and he froze. My own laugh trailed off awkwardly and I looked at him. His eyes were locked on the board and I bit my lip nervously. For some reason I knew he wasn't focusing on our game.
