Chapter 9 | Blind man's book
We entered the Dolor district just as the sky was darkening. I worried what Lucas would think when he reached the bedroom and found no wife in there. My boy shivered at the thought. Another room destroyed no doubt.
"I'm glad you didn't attempt this on your own," Lithan said softly. I agreed with him, each district was heavily guarded by large walls, metal gates and angry looking men. Luckily, all our driver had to do was roll down his window and they let him pass. The demons no doubt respected their king and his men.
We were pulling into a smaller wooden palace as the sky was fully darkened. I shivered in the cold, brisk air as I stepped out of the limo, annoyed at myself for bringing no jacket or even cloak.
"Miss," Lithan said quietly from behind me. I all but squealed and hugged the boy as he pulled out a long white cloak from the front of the limo. It stank of blood – copper and salt, as well as lavender and I didn't dare question the odd combination. Lithan blushed and I pulled the warm thing on. The driver had also gotten out but took a stance beside the limo with no intentions of moving. I sighed looking at the eerie wood palace, I notice it had few lights the place was incredibly dim and eerie. I honestly couldn't understand why Saanti would send me here if it wasn't to kill me.
"Miss?" Lithan asked curiously looking up me. I sighed, he was confused as to why we haven't moved yet and I didn't blame him. I was just merely bundling all my courage into a ball to hold tightly in myself. My lungs expanded as I drew in a long breath. Then I forced my feet to move, slowing shuffling towards the grand place. Foot after each other, slowly, with my guard up and the boy demon walking on alert beside me. We would be alright.
A few minutes went by as we stood in the empty court in front of two large birch doors. It was strange, most people would pick oak – it's heavy and sturdy – but birch is softer and lighter. A strange pick indeed. Something shifted near us I gasp, a gleam shot past me leaving a sting of pain to my cheek. My hand flew to my cheek which bled freely and Lithan pulled me back – behind him. My eyes darted around, trying to find the attacker.
"Lithan, get behind me," I ordered trying to move my body so he was behind me but the small boy wouldn't budge. His hand was on the dagger strapped to his waist and I worried. My body warmed to a scorching lava that pumped through my veins, my eyes burned through the dark air and locked on the figure – he was perched casually on the roof.
I could make him out clearly, wearing an old fashion tunic and black slacks – his feet were bare and he held a bow in one hand, an arrow being notched into place by the other. I breathed in, concentrating, the world slowed. His hair was long, almost down to his elbows, it was dark too – almost blending into the dark sky, and his eyes, they were a soft opal. He looked dead, with his pastel grey skin. I breathed out, the arrow move as did I.
My hand shot out, shoving Lithan's head down. The arrow less than a meter away, above Lithan's head. My fingers reached out, as if to catch the silver arrow, then closed around air as it flew past towards my face. I shut my fist tight, a rush of lava and the arrow dissolved into ash. I blinked quickly as the world returned to it's normal speed and my knees failed me. I fell over Lithan who let out a yelp attempting to catch me as I willed my legs to work.
