They were loading her on the stretcher and all the sudden she started seizure. "No time to wait we need to get her to the hospital now" The paramedic screamed as he stabbed a needle through her chest. "That slut is going to die!" Maui yelled as she was pulled to cop car. "Son go with Angel we will meet you there."
"Don't leave me Angel, don't you dare." I held her hand the best I could. They were performing cpr. Her heart stopped 3 times on the 15 minute ride to the hospital. I was forced to wait while they took her back. As I paced the waiting room covered in blood when my family come in. "What are they saying son?" "Nothing yet." Just then the doctors came out. "Mr. Chapman?" " how's she doing? what's going on?" " she lost a lot of blood. She's seized two more times. The liver was damaged we need to do emergency surgery on that and when the knife hit her chest it penetrated her heart as well. She's heading to the or now. Mr. Chapman I need to know if," "Save her. No matter what save my wife." "And the baby?" "What baby?" "Angel is pregnant." I lost it. I hit the floor crying. Did she know. No she couldn't have known. " sir save my daughter and grand baby please." "Leland come on let's get you cleaned up." Beth said as she cried with me.
3 and half hours later the doctors came back out. "Mr. Chapman?" I shook his hand and waited. "Angel seizure twice on the table we were able to stop both of them , the hole in her heart is repaired. We did have to remove part of her liver but it will function normally. Until we figure out what is causing the seizers she is in a medically induced coma." "Sir? How about..." I couldn't finish the rest. " your baby is perfectly fine. Kind of amazing really sir. That many seizures and the loss of blood the baby shouldn't have survived but she's a little fighter. And judging from her mother she should be. You didn't know she was 4 months along did you?" I couldn't answer him I just sat down. "When can we see her?" Beth asked. " now if you want. But she does have a breathing tube." "Thank you sir." I said as I stood up and shook his hand again. " I need to get cleaned and call her parents. I need to get them out here. I have to see how the boys are doing......" My boys had seen Angel fall. How was I going to tell them? What was I going to say to her parents?I had just promised them I wouldn't let anything happen to her" Just then Duane Lee came in with a duffel bag. " there's a shower right over there. I got some clothes in there, your charger and some other stuff. Now because Angel is in ICU they usually won't let kids in or over night guests, but their are going to make exception for us. I told them I wasn't sure about the kids but unless they wanted a fight they better let you stay. Now only a couple people at a time can go in. Oh Le Mr. and Mrs. Cobb are leaving Boston tomorrow morning and I have them on a non stop plane here I'll get them around 1." "Thank you Duane Lee. Thank you. I'm going to change. I got to the bathroom and stripped my blood filled clothes from my body. I watched the blood fill the bottom of tub. How could Maui do this? I was finally happy, and she had tried to take that away from me. Angel was pregnant. I had a little girl. I shut the water off and dried myself and braced myself for the worst, but I needed to see my Angel. "Daddy!!! Where's mama? Is she ok?" I hadn't fully broken down yet but I was closer now. "Hi boys. Listen I need to talk to you ok." I sat down with my sons, " mama is very hurt right now. She has a machine helping her breathe. She's going to be sleeping a lot too. But we're going to pray really hard and all the doctors are gunna help her feel better. Now I'm to go see mama you boys can stay here or you can see her with me." " I want to see mama daddy." I clutched my son close as I entered the room. " can I talk to her?" Cobie asked. " of course you can bud." I pulled the chair close to bed. He rumbled on and on and I just sat there. I don't even know what he was saying but I could feel my tears rolling down my face. " hi daddy." I turned to see Dakota at the door. "Hey bud come here." I said I pulled him close. They just talked to her. Before I knew it I was being woken up by a nurse, " I'm sorry sir but I have to take her vitals." I looked over and my boys were on the bed next to her. "I'm so sorry I didn't...." "It's ok sir, we've been able to keep an eye on her. We didn't have the heart to move you all." "How they doing?" "So far so good. We have to do a ultrasound make sure the baby is still ok."
I picked the boys up and walked into to the waiting room. I didn't even know what time it was. "Morning sunshine." Is what I was greeted with. I looked up to my entire family in the waiting room with two people who, at first I didn't recognized and then it dawned on me. "Come on boys, let's go eat." Duane Lee said as he took the boys. "Son these are Angel's parents." Before I could say anything they embraced me. " I'm so sorry Mr. & Mrs. Cobb. I promised to take care of her and here we are," " it's ok Leland we know that you didn't mean this to happen."
I spent an hour talking to them, telling them what the doctors had told me, before they went in to see her. I had Duane Lee take the boys home. Angel's parents were going to be staying until the doctors figured out why she was having seizures. They were happy that she was pregnant, shocked just like me but happy. " you guys look tired" I said as we were grabbing coffee. I hadn't eaten at all today but I wasn't hungry. I just wanted my Angel back, I wanted to see those pretty blue eyes. " I can have Duane Lee bring you to the house." Shai, Bob and Alex were with my parents and leaving tomorrow. They wanted to stay longer but couldn't. I was going to keep them updated and they would stop by tomorrow to say bye. After her parents visited with her a little while longer they went back to my house. I was alone with Angel. I climbed into bed with her and cried until I passed out. Once morning came I was awoken by a nurse and a team of doctors. Today was a day of testing and ct scans and ultra sounds. I saw my babygirl for the first time.
