He had a nice voice, sort of low and soft without being quiet. He was easy to talk to, there wasn't a second of awkwardness between us the entire time we drove. He was one of those charismatic people, I could tell already. He had charisma coming out his wazoo, easily leading from one topic to another in a natural, carefree way. That's a good thing, though, right?
It made the time go by fast, and, before I knew it, we were parking out the front of what I assumed was the mechanics.
It looked like a typical service station, where you could fill up and wash your windows then go and spend extra money on drinks and chewy and newspapers or whatever as you went to pay. Beside that was a shed, rust coloured stains bleeding down the sides of the dirty white paint an old faded sign offering all sorts of services. This was where Kyra lead me.
There was one yellow sedan raised up off the ground, with two people under it, an older guy and a younger one, closer to mine and Kyra's ages.
They were in deep discussion and didn't notice us at first, but then the younger of the two spotted us. He said something to his companion, who nodded, then he ducked out from under the car and came over.
"Hey man," he grinned brightly at Kyra, then glanced at me curiously, eyes alight and dancing, "hi."
"Hi," I responded as Kyra returned the other guy's fist bump.
"Edgy, this is Ashley," Kyra introduced us. "Ashley, Edgy."
"What's up?" He offered a friendly smile, given freely, and I couldn't help but return it.
"Car broke down," Kyra explained. "Up at Ocean- view road."
"Bugger," Edgy winced sympathetically, combing his greased stained hand through his wild, scruffy hair. "I'll ring Robby to tow it, then we'll have a look, and see what we can do."
I smiled gratefully as Edgy turned to go back into the garage. Kyra and I followed him into a small office in the side where he picked up the phone to make the call.
I gave him a description of the car as well as the registration plates and he told me that it would br towed within the hour so they could try and find the problem. I was feeling better already, trying not to remember how much it was probably going to cost, which most likely meant cutting my road trip short by... most of it.
Bugger nuts.
