Forty dollars per night wasn't bad, and it meant I wouldn't have to shower in the public toilet block under the cold water and risk contracting tinea and an assortment of other diseases. Hopefully.
There were three bunk beds against each wall, so, twelve people in total in the room. I stashed by bag in the locker under the bottom bunk, then wandered down to the courtyard at the back of the building.
Three girls were using the barbecues, talking and giggling. I quickly realised that I couldn't understand their language.
Another group were in a corner by themselves, talking and laughing over ciders. I watched one girl braiding another's hair while two guys were playing cards.
The breeze caught the sounds of people's voices, carrying them with it from the beach, and I breathed in deep the fresh, salty scent, exhaled and let myself relax.
