A simple note:
Italics mean that a character is thinking, unless shown otherwise.
'Single quotation marks' mean that a pokémon is talking. The running theme in these fanfics of mine is that a trainer with a good bond with their pokémon can understand them, but just not to a perfect degree (it's all in the context clues). I just like fun trainer and pokémon dynamics lol.

A cool wind carried leaves of auburn colors across the trees and buildings of a small city. It was a calm, autumn noon. A woman in her thirties, Lucinda, was walking back to her house. She passed by a boy and his little sister and greeted them on her way. It wasn't long till she stopped by her mailbox to admire the leaves that twirled in front of her for a moment before landing on the concrete path.
Just as she was about to enter her home, the ring of her phone caught her attention and she took it out without checking the name of the caller. "Ah, hello?" Her warm brown eyes lit up. "Why, Aurea Juniper! It's been far too long! What can I do for you?" Her expression changed to one of surprise as she took in her old friend's words. "Wow! A pokédex... for my child? Why, that's great! I think a journey would be a wonderful experience!" It was true. Her daughter seemed to show great interest in leaving their hometown. That sparkle in her blue eyes was noticeable, and she was obviously bored staying home. What better way than a pokémon journey?
Aurea's next words snapped her out of it. "She's already here? Oh, for Pete's sake. You never change. Once you've decided on something, you just start going." The brunette sighed, resting the hand not holding the phone against her hip. "Ok! Bianca, right? A big, green hat... Got it. Ok, no worries!" She bid her friend a goodbye before hanging up and finally heading inside her house. Her daughter was going to scream with joy.
Humming softly, a younger brunette ran a brush down her long hair. She loved her hair, really, but it was a hassle to take care of and proved to be quite the responsibility, almost like a pokémon. It usually took her ten minutes to style; now she had it in two buns atop her head with one lock on each side falling down to her waist – along with her bangs and two more, shorter, locks on either side of her face.
She let out a sigh, finally done. Maybe she should cut it soon, just to a moderate length, or a simple bob cut. 'But Hugh likes my hair the way it is...' The brunette remembered her childhood friend. You could say they're best friends, but best friends hung out constantly (from her knowledge of it) and she and Hugh didn't really do that anymore. Puberty does strange things to people, and it made her realize her friend was pretty damn cute. Like, fine as hell. No - HOT as hell. The brunette's face began to heat up so she quickly slapped herself without thinking. "Ow!" She yelped, resting a hand against her sore cheek. Because of her crush on Hugh, she distanced herself in fear of freaking him out, which was why they weren't as close as they used to be. Besides, the blue-haired teen seemed to have other things on his mind – pokémon, for example.
With a sigh, the girl stood up from her chair to stare at her reflection in disappointment. "Rosa! I'm home!" She perked up at the sound of her mother's voice and jogged out of her room and down the hall to the living area. Lucinda had gone for a walk to check if the Pokémon Center nearby needed any kind of help, as the woman used to help out with the ones in Nimbasa and Mistralton.
