"Not so fast, missy." Rosa jumped in fright before whipping her head around to see Hugh standing there. He had a smirk on his face but his eyes were glowing with amusement.

After almost an hour of making her way up this mountain, Rosa's legs were practically killing her. Battle after battle wore down her teammates, but they remained steadfast. Unfortunately, her supply of healing items were running out. When Rosa caught sight of the opening up ahead, she'd been hoping it meant the end of Victory Road.

"Let me guess," Rosa huffed despite her growing smile upon seeing him again. "You wanna battle me before I take on the League." Of course, she agreed. How long had it been since their last battle?

The two teens grabbed a random ball from their belt and enlarged it, confident in what they had picked. Hugh couldn't help smiling to himself. "You better go all out 'cause I'm not going easy on you – not when we're this close to the Elite Four!"

"I wouldn't dream of it~!" She smirked before they both locked eyes and released their chosen pokémon.

Shisa and Unfezant appeared in the field, taking only a split moment to observe their surroundings. Rosa was the first to call an order; her Arcanine charged forward with his teeth sparking with electricity. His speed usually did him proud, but Unfezant was fast too. At Hugh's command, the bird pokémon zipped to the side, dodging Shisa's attack. She was then cloaked in an orange glow before ramming into the Arcanine's side.

Rosa tapped her chin for a moment as Shisa shook off his injury and put some distance between him and Unfezant. The other pokémon should be on par with hers when it came to speed, so...?

Hugh used her moment of thought to order another facade. Once again, Unfezant began to glow and quickly flew at her opponent. "Shisa, retaliate!" The Arcanine seemed to light up too, his gaze focused on his approaching foe. When the bird made contact, the tip of her beak pointed at Shisa's chest, their energies clashed – one red, one orange.

Then, Shisa pushed his body forward to break the contact, causing Unfezant to flinch back in surprise. "Good! Now, thunder fang!" Rosa grinned, commanding with a strong voice. Her pokémon delivered a shocking bite to his opponent's neck before the bird met the ground with a thud.

Hugh returned Unfezant then smiled at the poké ball. "You did your best." He placed it back on his belt and picked out a new one, his Bouffalant. He looked back up to watch Rosa praise her pokémon with hugs and kisses, which brought a warm feeling to his chest. 'Ugh, now is not a good time to moon over her!' Hugh frantically shook his head.

He immediately stopped when he heard laughing. "You're kinda reminding me of this Psyduck I once saw!" Rosa covered her mouth as she gave a snort.

"And you're reminding me of a Tepig." Hugh bit his lip to keep from grinning when Rosa puffed out her cheeks, proceeding to hurtle more goofy insults at him. "Look, are we gonna spend the rest of our time flirting, or are we gonna finish this battle?" Upon noticing the girl freeze up, her face turning a nice shade of pink and her mouth opening just to stutter incoherent words, Hugh's eyes widened for a moment. Had he said the wrong thing?

'Was she always that cute??'

"Uh, BATTLE! We should, um, continue! Yeah!" Rosa slapped her cheeks a couple of times before returning Shisa, ignoring his knowing eyes, and sending out her Vaporeon. With that, Bouffalant made an appearance.
