Everyone was wearing green...
Except her. Oh crap!
Julie was wearing her usual blue tank top, navy jeans, and a pair of red sneakers along with her signature blue headband. No green in sight. On St. Patrick's Day!
Her school took holidays very seriously. So on St. Patrick's Day you just knew you were going to get pinched a lot if you weren't wearing any green. And if she didn't find any green to wear that was going to be her fate.
She sat down at her usual table in between Ivy and Romeo and moped.
Her friends were a completely different story. Romeo and Ivy had taken St. Paddy's Day very seriously. Ivy always did.
Ivy was completely decked out, head to toe. She was wearing a long sleeved green shirt with a green choker necklace, emerald shorts, thigh high pale green socks, and green sneakers. She was wearing her favorite kelly green headband and had even painted a clover on each cheek of her face and dyed a few strands of hair green.
She looked a bit like a leprechaun with her red hair, green clothes, bright lime eyes, and her short stature.
Romeo hadn't gone out of the same extent as Ivy, but he definitely had it covered. He had replaced his adored scarlet hoodie with shamrock colored hoodie, which was an odd sight for Julie as she knew how much he loved it. His pants were black with a large green stripe running down the sides. He too wore green sneakers. On his hoodie was a large mint badge that clearly read 'Kiss me, I'm Irish' and around his neck was a chain of plastic clovers.
"I understand why Ivy is dressed like that, but why are you, Cameron?" Eric wondered.
"Cause I got to show green pride!" Romeo beamed.
"You're not Irish, are you?" Julie wondered.
"Yep my grandma on my mom's side."
"Both my grandmas and my grandpas and my dad came directly from Ireland." Ivy stated.
"I know, Ivy." Julie rolled her eyes.
"I've also got Scottish and Italian in my family." Romeo stated. "Julie, did you forget to wear green?"
"Why do you care? What? Want to pinch her?" Eric wondered.
"No I forgot!" Julie groaned, flopping her head down on the table.
The bell rang. Oh no... She was going to get teased for not wearing any green and even pinched. An idea struck her and she chased after her friend.
"Romeo, wait!"
He turned around. "What do you need, Julie?"
"Can I please borrow your clover chain? I promise I'll give it back!" Julie wondered.
"Why?" Romeo asked.
"I don't want to get pinched! Please!"
"Hmm... No." Romeo smirked. The had stopped to talk in the middle of the hallway so the sea of students parted around them.
"Come on, please?" Julie begged.
"It's not my fault you forgot."
"You're mean." The girl pouted. Romeo rolled his eyes.
"Fine..." He took off the chain of plastic clovers. There was almost no one in the hallway now. There wasn't much time until the start of first period. He handed it to her. It wasn't like it was that big of a deal.
"Thanks, Romeo, you're the best!" Julie chirped.
She didn't know what caused her to do what she did next. She didn't think. It was merely an impulse.
Juliet stood on her toes and gave Romeo a peck on the cheek as if it was the most natural thing in the world. His eyes became as wide as dinner plates.
"See you later, Cameron!" Julie said, skipping off.
It took her a moment to realize what exactly she had done. She nearly stopped in her tracks. She had kissed Romeo on the cheek!
Romeo was just as shocked. She had left a glossy, chapstick mark on his cheek. He froze in the middle of the hallway. He watched her walk away. What did this mean? Should he go after her? Did she like him? Maybe giving her that chain was a big deal.
The bell rang signaling that first period was starting.
His hand reached up to the glossy mark and smiled.
Somethings were worth being late for.
