Mason watched Jason and Sophie continue dancing at the corner of his eyes. His eyes narrowed at the way Sophie was laughing, her eyes twinkling at what Jason was saying. He took another beer and gulped the contents trying to erase the thought of losing Sophie. He didn't know how many drinks he had and it didn't matter because he wanted to drink himself to oblivion. The thought of Sophie and Jason is leaving a bitter taste in his mouth.
His thoughts went back to the other night. He remembered Sophie asking him if he liked her. Her eyes were looking at him as though she was searching his soul. Do I like her? The thought was making him cringe but he remembered how they were always together.
Yes, Sophie was Yas' bestfriend and he had teased Sophie mercilessly and Sophie had teased him back. It had been always a game with the two of them but they never took this very far. It never reached a point wherein they hurt each other. Mason took another drink and remembered last night. He remembered how Sophie was beseeching him.
His feelings were a mess. Did he like Sophie? How the hell do you know if you like someone? He only knows that he never wants to see Sophie hurt. He wanted to kill Zio when they were in fifth grade when he tried bullying Sophie. He felt alarmed when Sophie got sick and it terrifed him when she was so weak. He had rushed to her house last year and panicked at the way she was so weak. He only knows that he wanted to take care of her and the thought of losing her is scaring him to death. Just the thought of Sophie being with another guy is making him sick.
"Oh, there you are Mason!" Marissa exclaimed, "I had been looking all over the place for you!"
Mason glanced at her blearily. Shit, he was getting really drunk and the room was starting to spin. How many bottles had he consumed? He was getting dizzy.
"Hey, are you ok? You look pale." Marissa asked in concern.
"Im ok. Leave me alone." he replied, suddenly angry at Marissa. How could he had been so stupid in saying yes as Marissa's date in the prom. It all started with that stupid Yes. He glared at her and opened another bottle. Sophie and him had a perfect relationship and it all came to hell because of that stupid prom date. He wanted everything to go back the way it was.
He wanted Sophie to be always there for him. He wanted to be Sophie's only dancing partner. He wanted to be Sophie's only date. He wanted to be the only one to make her laugh, the only one who can tease her, the only one to drive her home and the only one to take care of her. He wanted everything to go back the way it was.
He didn't even know what to do anymore. His heart was breaking and he was getting scared at the way Sophie was slowly drifting away. His heart constricted at the thought of Sophie no longer going with him on parties and especially at the thought of not seeing her at his games. The thought of Sophie watching Jason's games instead is driving him crazy. Seeing her laughing with him makes him want to commit murder.
He was glaring at them and didn't realize that they were approaching his table. Marissa's eyes narrowed at them then smiled widely as she took Mason's hands.
"Hey, Mason, do you want to go upstairs?" she snidely asked, raising her voice so that Sophie can hear.
Sophie's eyes narrowed at Marissa when she heard that. She saw that Mason was getting tipsy. She had never seen Mason drunk and was worried at the way he was drinking. "Mace, how many bottles have you consumed?" she asked worriedly.
"What do you care? You just go and dance with Jason. You're not my mom!" he replied slurring his words.
"You're not supposed to drink during the basketball season. Let me take you home!" Sophie replied taking the bottle of beer away from him.
"Give that back!" Mason replied, trying to grab it back but failed since he started swaying.
"You're drunk!"she said disgustedly. "Let me drive you home!"
"Why? Because you like me?" He replied back, goading her. "I know you like me. You were begging me to like you back last night. It was kind of pathetic!"
Sophie stepped back as though he had slapped her. She gazed at him, stricken and her face paled as she saw Marissa smirked at her. Mason saw this and his gut clenched at her hurt look but he was also so hurt at the way she was drifting away from him and he wanted her to feel it too. It was as though the words kept on leaving his mouth, trying to hurt as much as he was hurting.
"So Jason, did Sophie tell you that he likes me? How did that make you feel? Aren't you kind of pathetic dating someone who is in love with someone else?" He shouted at Jason.
Jason clenched his hand and saw how hurt Sophie was. He pulled back his arm and punched Mason. "You son of a b*tch! You're drunk so just shut the hell up!" Jason shouted angrily. Mason fell on the floor with a crash and everyone was surprised at the fight brewing.
Chris and Yas ran towards them and grabbed Mason as he tried to barrel towards Jason. James grabbed Jason and pulled him back. "Just bring home Sophie Jason." James whispered.
"Ok everyone, party's over!" Chris shouted and started asking everyone to go home. Jason looked at Sophie and tenderly held her. "Let me bring you home Sophie." He said, looking worriedly at her. She nodded her head following him.
Mason looked at them helplessly, suddenly disgusted with himself. How could he be so stupid? He wanted to run to Sophie and beg her forgiveness. Suddenly, it felt like he had finally lost her. He felt as though his heart was wrenched from his chest and suddenly all that he had drunk rose from his stomach and he started puking at the floor.
