The following day, Mason woke up early and hurriedly knocked on Yasmin's door.
"Yasmin, wake up! We have to leave early. I have practice." he said raising his voice.
Yasmin opened the door and groggily looked at her brother.
"No need to wait for me. I will just wait for Sophie. I called her last night and she said she will drop by." she said with half opened eyes.
"She's coming over? What time will she be here?" Mason asked excitedly.
"Our class is still by 8am. She'll be here by 7. Why are you so excited all of a sudden." she asked puzzled.
"No reason. Maybe I can wait for you. I plan to eat breakfast anyway." Mason said shrugging his shoulders.
"Huh? Isn't your practice by 6am? Go to school Mason. You'll only be aggravating her. I plan to have a peaceful ride to school today." she replied.
"I won't aggravate her. I just wanted to talk her out of asking Jason. I mean, that's the craziest idea she ever came up with. I would have thought that she's too smart for that. She's a genius for God's sake!" he exclaimed.
"C'mon Mace, just stop it. You're going with Marissa so there's no point criticizing her choice. Ohh.....unless you wanted Sophie to ask you?" Yasmin asked snidely, smirking at her brother.
"Of course not!" Mason said defensively. "Who are you going with anyway?"
"I'm going with Chris and stop it with that "big brother" attitude. We're only 5 minutes apart. Being with you is like wearing a chastity belt. Just go to school Mason. We have first class together so if you want to lecture Sophie just do it there." she said slamming the door at his face.
Mason jumped backwards taken by surprise. "Aargh, sometimes I hate her!" he exclaimed.
He hurriedly took a bath and drove to school, thinking of ways to explain to Sophie why she shouldn't be going with Jason. His team mates were already at the court when he arrived waiting for Coach Alex.
"Hey man! I heard you were asked by the hottest girl in school! Congratulations!Wow Marissa!" James teased, slapping his back.
"Ah, yes. I'm going to the prom with her. " he said shrugging.
"Good for you man. You might get lucky after the prom." he winked.
"I didn't realize you wanted to go with her. I thought you were going with Sophie and we will all go together." Chris said wonderingly.
"She didn't asked me, ok? Anyway, she's being so irritating lately." he replied defensively.
"To tell you the truth, that's what we all thought. You both fight and bicker like old couples so we thought you're going together." Kyle said laughing out loud.
Mason glared at him.
"Oh don't worry about Sophie. Jason called me last night and he said Sophie asked her." James said.
"What did you say?" Mason asked turning his gaze at him.
"Well, you know Jason and me are friends, right? Jason called me up last night and was ecstatic that Sophie asked him. He had liked her for the longest time. He's besotted with her to be honest. I mean the only reason that he wouldn't approach is the fact that you're always with her. You're like her guard man." he explained.
"Oh well, he's our shooting guard so he's just playing his part." Kyle teased then was taken aback at the obvious anger in Mason's eyes when he looked at him.
"Calm down Mason. It was just a joke." Chris said in a placating manner and pulled Mason on the side.
"I'm going to kill her." he muttered.
"Why are you so mad? I mean you're going with Marissa, right?" Chris said puzzled.
"You know how Jason is Chris. G is so naive that he'll probably take advantage of her." he explained, his eyes blazing in fury not thinking why the thought of Jason and Sophie was making his chest constrict painfully.
It was that time that Coach Alex arrived and asked everyone to start the drills.
