Sophie was running mindlessly towards the exit, unable to forget the passionate kiss she witnessed. She didn't stop to analyze why she was so affected or felt like someone punched her in the gut. She just wanted to disappear and go home and mend her broken heart.
"Sh*t! Mend my broken heart? What the hell am I thinking." Sophie flinched at the thought. And then she knew.
She knew that she had fallen in love with Mason. Somehow, she had always known and had tried to fight it. She had fallen in love with her infuriating enemy. Her mind snapped back at their antics, the way he had teased her and the way she had teased him but there had been always that sense of understanding between them. He had always taken care of her and she had taken care of him. It was true what they say that there is a thin line between love and hate.
It had always been her and him ever since second grade and it hurts so much to see him in someone else's arms. Her heart hurt a thousand times and she wanted to curl into herself and cry.
"Hey, are you ok?" Jason said worriedly when he was able to catch up with her at the parking lot.
Sophie looked at him with glistening eyes, and shook her head. "Can we go home now." she asked her breath hitching.
"Yeah, sure." Jason nodded in understanding and guided her inside the car.
Jason drove silently and glanced at Sophie anxiously. Sophie was staring in front, lost in her thoughts trying desperately not to cry.
"For all its worth, I didn't think Mason kissed her back." Jason said breaking the silence.
Sophie snapped her head and looked at him, surprised at his words.
"What do you mean?" she asked uncertainly.
Jason just smiled and said, "I saw Marissa grab Mason and kiss him when we were approaching. He didn't seem to be an active participant."
"I don't care!" she replied vehemently. However, she felt as though a weight had been lifted from her chest.
Jason gave a bark of laughter at her response,"You do care Sophie. You look so dejected awhile ago. Don't worry, I'm going to help you get him!"
Sophie looked at him in embarrassment then narrowed her gaze at his devilish smile.
"What are you planning?" she asked in suspicion.
Jason gave her a lopsided grin which made him look so breathtakingly handsome that even Sophie sighed. "Well, for the first time in my life, I am helping a damsel in distress. I am willing to pretend to be your boyfriend which will make Mason so angry that he will take you away from my "dangerous" clutches!" he said, his shoulders shaking from trying to contain his laughter.
"Haha! Real funny Jason. He probably wouldn't care if I have a boyfriend."she replied, still stung from what she saw earlier.
"That's where you're wrong Sophie! You should have seen him when you sat near me. I would probably be dead if looks could kill." Jayson said stating his observation. "And if I were you, I should be trying to check my phone."
Sophie took out her phone in response to his statement. Her eyes widened at the 20 missed calls from Mason. She went to her messages and saw 10 unread messages. She scrolled through it and was amazed to see it all coming from Mason.
"Ummm, I don't think he is too happy with me leaving with you after the show." she said surprised.
"My thoughts exactly. And now if we're going to continue with our plan of snaring the elusive Mason, I would suggest that you would send him a reply stating that you're going home with the very handsome and charming Jason Williams." he replied, winking at her.
Sophie snorted and said,"You mean the very self-centered and arrogant Jason Williams!"
"Ouch Sophie, you can destroy a man's confidence that way," he replied pretending to be hurt. "It's a good thing though that mine has been fortified by a lot of ladies!"
"Yeah, hundreds of ladies. You have probably dated everyone in school." she said teasing him.
"Oh well, they could never refuse my very handsome and charming self. Let me tell you secret," Jason said leaning towards her, a teasing glint in his eyes. "I sometimes amaze even myself."
"How very humble of you!" Sophie replied sarcastically.
"What can I say, I'm just perfect this way!" Jason replied, laughing with her as they neared her house.
Sophie doubled with laughter at his statement. Tears of mirth were falling in her eyes at his absurdity. She was clutching her sides, laughing uproariously.
Jason was looking at her in amusement as he parked at the sidewalk, happy to be able to erase her sorrow. He felt a twinge in his heart when he saw her doubled in pain. He had never felt this way with anyone and he had to restrain himself from kissing her.
"I am such an idiot. What was I thinking trying to help her get Mason when all I wanted was to be with her." Jason thought.
Sophie was finally able to contain herself and she turned to look at Jason in gratitude. "Thank you so much Jason!" she said and impulsively gave him a hug.
And that was how Mason saw them when he got out of his car.
