Magnetism
“Uh, Salvatore?” I called awkwardly. I had been mentally telling myself the whole
way that I’d just knock on the door and tell him to come for breakfast but when I
reached the study, I found the door open. My interest spiked as I stood by the door,
noiselessly, and watched him work. He was so engrossed in his work that he did not
notice me standing. After what I thought it was getting a stakerish, I decided to call
him out.
“Cassandra?” he said, looking up at me in surprise.
“I, uh, breakfast’s ready.” I said, practically running away.
“He coming?” Concha asked, looking strangely at me.
“Yeah.” Was all I said as I sat at the table, trying to calm myself down. I was
pouring some orange juice for myself when Salvatore walked into the room.
It might sound clichéd, but it was almost like there was a charge of electricity
humming between us. Like two ends of a magnet, inching towards ecahother. It was
like it was happening in slow motion, as he slowly made his way towards me.
“Ah, there you are!” Concha’s jubilant voice broke me out of my rearview as I
realized that I had been unconsciously leaning towards him.
Freaked out of my wits, I stood up. “Uh, exc……excuse me.” I managed to mumble
as I hastily made my way out of the dining hall, away from him.
I was sitting on the bed, pounding over my options when I heard the door creak
open. I rather felt him, than saw him, and it freaked the hell out of me.
“Take me home.” I said quietly, breaking the silence.
“Cassandra…..” he started but I was having none of it, not anymore.
“Please.” I tried. I was determined to go back to my apartment. If he wouldn’t give
me a ride then I’d just call myself a cab.
“Fine, but eat something first.” I started to protest but he cut me off. “No arguing
in this one Cassandra, you need to take your medicines after breakfast.” He said
with conviction. I sighed in defeat and turned around to face him for the first time
since he entered the room. I was surprised to see a tray of breakfast in his hands. As
he walked closer I realized that it was very much in quantity.
I was even more surprised when Naina and Santiago entered after him. I felt
myself smile. Naina slowly came towards me, as if she was afraid that any sudden
movements might scare me away. I opened my arms in invitation. She took the clue
and flew into my arms, clutching onto me for her dear life. I didn’t know why I was
acting like I just had a few hours to live. I didn’t realize I was crying until Naina
pulled back and wiped my tears. I smiled a teary smile at her. Her responding smile
was dazzling.
“And I’d say you guys were seeing eachother after years.” Santiago’s playful voice
snapped me out of my rearview.
“No, a few hours actually.” I said with a smile. “Hi.” I said in greeting, he smiles
and nodded.
“Heard about you little swooning act, how you feeling?” though he said in a light
tone, I could see the underlying worry in his eyes. Brother, like brother.
“Better.”
“Alright, enough with the socializing. It’s so damn early and I’m way too hungry!”
Naina whined. We smiled and started with the breakfast as Salvatore had already
set the tray on the coffee table, handling out plates to us.
“Has Concha eaten?” I asked I Naina handed over a plate to me.
“She’s having breakfast as we speak.” He said with a strange glint in his eyes. I
shook my head and looked away. Concentrating on Naina and Santiago’s ongoing
conversation.
