Waiting
Salvatore
“Husband!” she asked in a high pitched voice, as if I had just told her that I
committed murder. Maybe it would’ve been better if I had told her that I was a
murderer!
“Yeah, husband.” I said slowly, as if speaking to a child.
“Right. I would suggest you step out of this room.” She said in a calm voice as she
placed a pillow beneath Cassandra's head to make her more comfortable.
“I think I’ll pass.” I said stiffly, standing my ground.
“Look, I don’t know who you are or…..” but I cut her off.
“Dannazione! (Goddammit!) I’m her husband!” I almost screamed out of frustration. But when I
saw the look of utter fright on the doctor’s face I willed myself to calm down. “Look,
if you don’t believe me, call Naina and ask her.” I said, hoping as hell she knows
Naina.
“I just might.” She said as she hooked some machines onto Cassandra and then
proceeded to call Naina. But before she could even dial a single digit, a fanatic
Naina burst through the door.
“Salvatore! Sam! How is she?” was the first thing out of her mouth as she tried to
catch her breath.
“So you do know him?” Dr. Samantha said, frowning at us.
“Of course I do, he’s her husband.” She said as if it were the most logical thing.
“When did she get married?” Dr. Samantha raised her eyebrows at Naina.
“Look, it’s a really long story. For now, why don’t you tell us what happened to
Cassandra?” I asked anxiously.
“Uh, alright. I’m running some tests, the results would be out in about an hour.”
She said as she adjusted a tube on the machine that was currently attached to
Cassandra.
“Wait, no blood test?” Naina asked, looking around.
“No, this machine covers pretty much everything.” She said, adjusting some kind
of a dial on the controller module. “Now, where were we?” she asked as she turned
around to face us.
Damn, I’m in so much trouble! I thought as I shared a look with Naina.
Half an hour later, things finally cleared up. It turns out; Dr. Samantha is
Cassandra’s distant aunt. Well, that explains her inquisitive nature.
“So, your marriage was a mistake?” she asked skeptically.
“Yes, uh, no. It’s complicated.” I tried. I was really getting worried about
Cassandra. The Samantha had given her anesthetic to get her to rest in order to
gain some of her strength.
“The understatement of the century.” Naina muttered, I shot her a glare.
“Alright, alright. Enough, both of you.” She said trying to get us to cool off. Ever
since I started with my side of the story, Naina had been butting in quite frequently,
with her angry, sarcastic quips an it was starting to get on my nerves. “Look
Salvatore, I don’t know what happened between you two and I have no right to
judge. All I can do is give you advice. Just, take it slowly with her. She’s been
through a lot, let her be at peace for once.” She patted my hand as she stood up and
walked to the machine. I, too, walked to her side and gently took her hand in mine,
and rubbed it soothingly. I caught Samantha looking at us from the corner of her
eye, but didn’t say anything. Naina simply sat there, texting on her phone. With
Santiago, probably.
“Tell him I’ll be late for dinner.” I said casually to Naina.
“He’s asking what’s holding you up? Shall I tell him?” Naina asked, looking
innocently at me.
“Didn’t you already?” I asked her, sarcasm laced in my voice. She stuck her
tongue out at me. I chuckled and shook my head. Kids.
“So, the reports are out.” Samantha announced, instantly gaining our attention.
“What does it say?” I beat Naina to it.
“Uh, most of her tests are normal.” She said, flipping pages.
“Most of the tests?” I asked, getting panicky.
“Yeah, her HB is low.” She muttered, scanning the reports. “Oh God!” she
suddenly gasped, her eyes going as wide as saucers.
“What?” I asked. But when she didn’t reply, I took the reports out of her hand.
And got the shock of my life.
“ Oh, Cassandra…..” I whispered.
Yeah, yeah! I know it took me really long, but let me ask you, was it worth
it?
