Silence before the Storm
Cassandra
I was floating in the fog, when I heard a distant shrill. Listening carefully, I
realized it was my cell phone. I opened my eyes to darkness, with streaks of lights.
Blindly, I reached for the light button. Within minutes, the room was illuminated
with lights. I covered my eyes at the sudden robust. I tried reaching for my phone
when I noticed some kind of heaviness on my stomach. I hesitantly looked down,
only to find Salvatore, shirtless, fast asleep while his arms encircled my waist as his
face rested atop my belly. Events of last night came flooding back to me. I looked
down at his sleeping form. Content with the peaceful look on his face, I reached for
my phone. Thankfully, I found it and answered right away, happy that Salvatore had
not woken up.
“Hello?” I almost whispered.
“Cassy? Why are you whispering?” Marcie’s screechy voice answered from the
other end. I grimaced.
“Marcie, I’ll, uh talk to you later. Bye.’ I said shortly and snapped my phone shut,
immediately putting it on silent, in case Marcie might not get the clue. Noticing it
was almost 10 in the morning, I called Naina for an update. I lowered the call
volume.
“Sims?” She picked up after the third ring.
“Nope!” answered Santiago.
“Hey, sorry to be short, but where’s Sims?” I whispered frenetically into the
receiver as Salvatore stirred. I knew it was a matter of minutes before he was
awake.
“Sure thing, sis.Naina!” I heard Sims in a distance, asking Santiago who it was.
“Cassy?”
“Hey Sims. How was it yesterday?” I cut to the chase.
“Alright. I told them you had an emergency at work.” She said in a weird,
high-pitch tone.
“Naina? You ok?” I asked, getting concerned.
“Yeah, just fine!” she said in that weird tone, again. “Look, I’ll call you back. Bye!”
I wanted to say more but when I heard her breathy voice mutter Santiago I realized
the situation. I quickly shut the phone.
“Cassandra?” I heard Salvatore mummer sleepily. I jumped in surprise.
“Oh, your awake.” I said. Looking down at him with a smile. He looked up at me in
confusion.
“Who was that?” he asked in a gruff voice. I passed him the water from the
nightstand. He took it with a grateful smile.
“Sims and Santiago.” I replied as I tried to adjust my dress which had ridden up,
barely covering my thigh.
