Reports
Cassandra
“Tell me exactly what it is.” I said in a calm voice, my years of practice with my
family coming in handy. I knew why she was hesitating. She knew how much I loved
children, she knew how much I wanted one of my own. From the looks on their
faces, I knew I had not fooled them but that did not deter me.
I knew the extent of the storm brewing inside of me. I felt grief and fear
overtaking my senses, but just like every other time, I took it as a challenge. A
challenge that I have to overcome, no matter what for this was my last piece of
sanity. And I’m not losing it without a fight.
“Cassy, why don’t you…..” Aunt Sam started in a calm voice, approaching me
through the psychological way but I was having none of it.
“I have a right to know.” I said in a deadly calm voice which left no room for
discussion. Besides me, Salvatore gave my hand a squeeze to show his support.
“Alright.” She sighed. “But do not interrupt me until I’m done.” We nodded our
heads. “You remember I did some tests yesterday?” we nodded again, but I noticed
Salvatore frowning. Thankfully, he did not interrupt. “Well the results were out
within the hour, but I was not satisfied with them, so I sent them to my seniors for a
second opinion.” She looked at us, then she looked down at the file that held my
fate. She slowly started opening it. And then it came, like a massive fireball.
“Cassandra, on the night you became pregnant, you had consumed some kind of
drug. We’re not sure what but it had hints of cyanide and phosphate, which makes it
very rare and has a lot of side effects. It was the reason you got pregnant even after
being on a birth control pill.” Even though I knew it was private information, and
under other circumstances, I would’ve blushed at such an open mention of it in front
of anybody. But right now, I just couldn’t bring myself to blush. The only thing going
in my mind was how is my baby.
“These reports indicate that you had consumed more than desirable quantity of it,
which only increased the risk.” She said as she pushed the file towards us. As I
spared a glance at the results, I found my composure slowly breaking down. Aunt
Sam started speaking again.
“I’m going to be truthful about it. Cassandra, there is a major complication in your
pregnancy.” I fought even harder to maintain my composure for I knew the
consequences of letting myself go. Salvatore rubbed my back in small circles, but it
did little to soothe me. “All the mood swings you’re suffering are not normal, Cassy.
They should be starting when you enter the first month of your pregnancy. We don’t
know what you consumed, but we know that it’s somehow making your basic vital
levels unstable.” Tears were freely flowing down my cheeks now but I willed myself
and asked the dreaded question.
“Wha... What ab…about the b-baby?” but my shaky voice betrayed me.
“Well, right now, we need to get your vitals stable, or…….” But she trailed off. I
knew something bad was coming.
“Or?” I asked in a small voice.
“Or, you can have a miscarriage.” But no matter how much I tried to steel myself,
the force of the blow remained the same. And that’s when I lost it.
Completely.
Small chapter, I know. But it’s just getting started…… Besides, I just
couldn’t reveal it all in only one chapter!
