Chapter Forty

***Cameron's POV***

Soft snores escaped Lexi's mouth, as her chest gently rose up and down. She looked so peaceful when she slept.

I just don't understand how she could possibly have cancer. She was always laughing, smiling, and just being herself.

"Why did you jump out of the window, have your body painted at the party, and everything else?" I asked, looking down at her.

"You never know when you won't be able to do those things anymore, Cameron. I want to live my life to the fullest before I can't." Lexi said, smiling up at me.

"You have time." I said, wrapping my arms around her waist.

"You never know." She said, wrapping her arms around my neck, hugging me tightly.

I thought back to our conversation a few days ago. It all makes sense now... Lexi didn't know how much time she would have...

How did I not notice sooner? I-

I was snapped out of my thoughts when the steady pattern of Lexi's breathing stopped. Skipped one breath... two... three...

"Lexi?" I asked, sitting up.

"Lexi!" I tried again, shaking her arm.

I quickly pulled out my phone, and dialed 911.

"911, what's your emergency?" The voice on the other end said.

"My friend stopped breathing, I need an ambulance now!" I yelled into the speaker.

"Ok, I am using the address from your phone. Help is on the way." The voice said, and hung up.

"Lexi Summers?" A deep, familiar voice asked, and I looked up. I shot up from the plastic chair in the waiting room.

"Cameron?" Mike asked, walking towards me, "What happened?" He asked.

"I don't know, one minute she was sleeping, the next she just stopped breathing." I said, and he nodded.

"Thank you." He said quickly, before running off with Lexi's dad.

I stood watching them run down the hall towards Lexi's room, completely frozen and unable to move.

... How could I let this happen?
