Everyone could tell that it was love at first sight for the two young boys. Evan was six and Jonathan five.

They made cheap horses out of sticks that they found in the wooded areas that surrounded them. They would dance around each other, neighing and galloping as shrill laughter filled the air as they played cowboy.

Evan would always let Jonathan win, he was endeared by the young boy no younger than him by only a few year and few weeks.

"Bang bang! I got you, Evvy!" Jonathan would shout as Evan would slump to the ground. Jonathan would always rush to his side and ask if he was okay, Evan would just lay there for a few minutes playing dead until Jonathan's eyes started to tear up and Evan would wipe them away with such tenderness that it was hard to believe it came from a boy of such young age.

The adults wouldn't dare speak their business around such innocence. Jan Lee Fong leader of a ruthless cartel that would import weapons and drugs among other things. Michelle Dennis, a corrupt cop and the sheriff no less.

The arrangement was made after only a few weeks that their boys no matter what were to be wed, it didn't matter they were both boys both men saw the love in their sons' eyes. It was no different from when they looked at their own wives.

Seasons came and changed the time and both sides were tense with each other by then, but everyone gathered with semi-forced smiles and praises as to not ruin Evan and Jonathan's big day.

Evan and Jonathan did everything together. Had all their firsts.

The first kiss was in the woods where their parents would meet to speak of business that neither Evan, twelve, nor Jonathan, eleven, couldn't care less about.

The first time was soft and passionate. Evan, seventeen, had never lost his tender, caring and gentle touch that was only ever reserved for Jonathan, sixteen.

The first fight was loud and shook the foundations of everything their parents built but they quickly put the debacle at rest with nothing more that a tender kiss pressed to silent Jonathan's, nineteen, rambling lips.

And this is where they stand now. Evan, thirty-three and Jonathan, thirty-two. Guns aimed at each other in the pouring rain of late January that stings at their faces with cold wet bullets that fall from the sky. Even as Evan glares at his husband he still has a fondness in his eyes.

It's a cruel sweet irony that stabs Jonathan in the gut as he pulls the trigger and the recoil makes him double tap hitting Evan in the chest and shoulder. "Bang bang," Jonathan muttered. "I got you, Evvy..." Jonathan sobbed and tears clouded his sight as he made his way to kneel next to him.

Evan coughed and heaved. "M-y baby.. shot-shot me down." he sputtered before he started laughing. It was a pained breathless laugh that drawled with irony as tears left stains down the sides of his face before Jonathan felt a strong hand wrap around his head and their lips met. It tasted like copper and iron with something sweet. Evan's hand fell limp and Jonathan pulled away.

"What happened to us, Ev?" he asked. His voice hoarse and broken with held back sobs. "Just last week... we were-" he choked on his words as he let out another sob. "We were talking about kids, Evan," he sobbed his name before speaking again. "A bouncing baby girl that would've had this, odd but adorable laugh and these deep brown eyes and your black hair... and my pale skin." his shoulders shook, racked with sobs as he lay his head on his dead lover's chest. "Where did it all go wrong?" he whispered.

Evan didn't respond and Jonathan could no longer feel his heart beating. He lied down next to him as the rain continued to pour down soaking Jonathan to the bone until he stopped shivering and he felt as if he were laying in the grass on a mid-summer day.

His eyes fell slowly. His breath long and labored before he gave in and closed his eyes wishing that for all the things he had done over the years to be forgiven if only for a mere moment so that he could see Evan again, to tell him he loves him one last time.
